One Way to Practice Trusting in God

People talk a lot about trusting the Lord, but they don’t always explain, “This is what trust looks like. Here’s how to do it.”

HOW does a person trust the Lord?

What does that mean practically?

What does trusting the Lord look like in YOUR situation?

  • Maybe you are single and hoping to meet the right person.

  • Maybe you have met the right person, but the two of you are trying to work through your issues. Learning how to trust another person in a relationship can be HARD, especially if you struggle with fear or anxiety.

  • Maybe you have been asking the Lord for a better place to live, for a better job, for increased income, etc. But so far, you have not seen His answer.

Trusting the Lord is something all of us need to learn, and it looks different in each situation.

Because trust can look different, one of the most beautiful things we can do is ask the Lord, “What does it look like to trust You right now?”

You might be surprised at what He says. His answer could be profoundly simple—yet it is exactly what you need in the moment.

God’s Voice vs. the World’s Voice

The voice of the Lord is a beautiful thing, and many times what He says is much simpler than what we are hearing from the world.

The world might be saying, “You need to worry about this and this and this! What if this bad thing happens? What is your contingency plan? What can you do to make sure you get what you want? How can you make sure that your desired outcome happens?”

At the same time, the Holy Spirit might be saying, “You really can trust Me in this. You can trust Me with your health. You can trust Me with your job. You can trust Me with your relationship. You can trust Me to do what I promised.”

Exercising Your Trust in God

What does trusting the Lord look like for you today?

If you are in a situation where you need to trust the Lord—and you probably are, because all of us need to trust Him in one way or another—take a few minutes just to be in His presence. Quiet your heart before Him, so you can hear His voice more clearly, and then ask Him what trusting Him looks like in your situation.

  • He might tell you to think a different way. “You are expecting bad things to happen, and you need to expect good things instead.”

  • He might tell you a verse from Scripture. “In quietness and trust is your strength” (Isa. 30:15 NASB).

  • He could direct you to something He told you in the past. “This is still true.”

  • He might tell you to rely on His understanding of the situation, not on human understanding (Prov. 3:5).

Whatever He tells you, it will line up with His Word and His heart, and it will be exactly what you need in the moment. You can trust Him.
