3 Ways to Pray for Your Dating Relationship

In every relationship, dating or otherwise, there will be questions. Having questions is normal, especially when you’re considering spending the rest of your life with someone.

But here is something a lot of daters don’t understand. Whatever your questions are—big or small—you don’t have to figure them out by yourself. You can trust the Lord to help you. He actually wants to carry all your questions for you:

Throw all your anxiety onto him, because he cares about you. (1 Peter 5:7 CEB)

Turn your burdens over to Yahweh,
and he will take care of you.
He will never let the righteous person stumble. (Ps. 55:22 NOG)

If you want to know what God wants you to do, ask him, and he will gladly tell you, for he is always ready to give a bountiful supply of wisdom to all who ask him; he will not resent it. (Jas. 1:5 TLB)

All of those verses apply to your dating life. The Lord loves you, and He wants to take care of you.

Here are some common dating questions and corresponding truths from God’s Word. You can trust Him and His voice in your relationship, even when you feel discouraged or don’t know what to do.

1. The Lord is CLOSER than all the things you are worried about.

Common dating questions when people are anxious:

  • “What if dating this person is a mistake?”

  • “What if we don’t have all the money we need?”

  • “What if this person won’t be there when I need them?”

What the Bible says:

You are near, O Lord [nearer to me than my foes], and all Your commandments are truth. (Ps. 119:151 AMPC)

The Lord is closer to you than all your fears. He stands between you and all fear-based questions. The whisperings of the enemy will eventually fall apart, but what the Lord has said will stand true forever.

With Psalm 119:151 in mind, here is one way you can pray for your relationship:

Lord, thank You for being close to me. I acknowledge Your nearness and that You stand between me and all my fears. What You have spoken to me is beautiful and trustworthy, even if I don’t fully understand it right now, and I am going to hold on to those words and trust You with all my heart.

2. The Lord meant every word He told you about your future marriage.

Common dating questions when people are frustrated or afraid:

  • “This is taking soooooo long! Why do I have to keep waiting?”

  • “What if God doesn’t come through for me?”

  • “What if He doesn’t do what He said?”

What the Bible says:

The very essence of your words is truth;
all your just regulations will stand forever. (Ps. 119:160 NLT)

Everything about the words of the Lord—every detail, every movement, every stroke of the pen, every thought behind and before those words—is absolute truth. His words will stand forever, exist forever, and continue forever because they are truth.

What has God told YOU about your relationship? You can stand on those words forever. Whenever you start to feel frustrated or afraid, remind yourself of what God has said.

With Psalm 119:160 in mind, here is one way you can pray for your relationship:

Lord, thank You for every single thing You have told me about my future marriage. I trust You with these words, and I know You will do what You have said.

3. Don’t be afraid to listen to the Holy Spirit and follow His leading in your relationship.

Common dating questions when people are confused or worried about God’s voice:

  • “What if I can’t hear God?”

  • “What if the Lord doesn’t care about the desires of my heart?”

  • “What if God tells me something bad?”

  • “How do I know trying to hear Him will actually work for me?”

What the Bible says:

Whoever belongs to God hears what God says. (John 8:47 NIV)

Therefore, everyone who hears what I say and obeys it will be like a wise person who built a house on rock. Rain poured, and floods came. Winds blew and beat against that house. But it did not collapse, because its foundation was on rock. (Matt. 7:24–25 NOG)

The most important thing you have in your dating relationship is the Lord. His ways are trustworthy, and He loves kindness, and you can hear His voice. When you build the “house” of your dating relationship on Him, it will not collapse.

With John 8:47 and Matthew 7:24–25 in mind, here is one way you can pray for your relationship:

Father God, thank You that I can hear Your voice in my relationship. Your voice is my treasure, and it is the foundation I am standing on. Please lead me in my relationship with this person, and may Your hopes and dreams for us come about.
