Asking the Lord for Protection
Do you ever ask the Lord to keep you safe? Not just before you leave for a trip or do something that might be dangerous, but every day?
When you ask the Lord to protect you, or to protect someone you care about, you are making a beautiful request that delights His heart.
You are not asking Him to do something that is inconvenient. You are not asking Him to do something He would rather not do.
You are asking Him to be who He is—He is your Protector in every possible way.
A prayer for protection “matches” His heart.
The Bible says many beautiful things about God being our Protector. Here is just a sampling:
God is the One who keeps people safe (Ps. 54:4).
He protects His children from evil (Ps. 121:7).
He is a shield for them (Ps. 18:30).
He delivers His children from harm (Ps. 91:14).
He sets His children free from the enemy’s traps (Ps. 31:4).
He keeps His children safe from the evil one (John 17:15).
He is a strong tower that keeps His children safe (Prov. 18:10).
Asking for protection lines up with the Lord’s heart and what He already wants to do for you, because You are precious to Him. So when you ask Him to protect you, you are asking for His will to be done in your life. It is like we are asking Him to come and reveal more of His glory—to show us and other people what He is really like.
Asking for protection is a form of worship.
He’s the only One who can protect someone successfully.
We cannot protect ourselves and be successful at it long term. God needs to be involved in a person’s protection, because only then does the protection actually work.
Unless the Lord builds a house,
the work of the builders is wasted.
Unless the Lord protects a city,
guarding it with sentries will do no good. (Ps. 127:1 NLT)
Praying for protection is a prayer that lines up with His will and His heart. He wants to protect and take care of people, because that is who He is.
How often do you ask God to protect you or the people you care about?
Are you asking Him to protect you and your family?
Are you asking Him to protect the person you are dating (or the person you will date in the future)?
Are you asking Him to protect your city?
Are you asking Him to protect your nation?
The request for divine protection is special because it involves His heart and His nature. This week, take some time every day to ask Him to protect you, and write down what He reveals to your heart through this small experiment.
