Setting the Lord Before You

Do you feel uncertain about the future?

Are you wondering if God is going to keep you safe?

Whenever there is something we could be afraid of, the most important thing we can do is “set” the Lord before us. We give Him—not the fear—our attention, and as we do this, something amazing happens:

I have set the Lord always before me;
Because He is at my right hand I shall not be moved. (Ps. 16:8 NKJV)

When the Lord is our focus, we are not moved. That is a very comforting thought when it seems like everything is shaking.

Is something dark or scary filling your vision? Do you need to set the Lord before you instead?

Trusting God Is the Wise Thing to Do

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,
And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding. (Prov. 9:10 NASB)

Real wisdom looks like trusting the Lord. That is the wisest thing we could ever do. Whatever is going on—in our personal life, in our family, in the world—the answer is setting the Lord before us and giving Him our attention.

Fear will try to tell us it is better to trust in things we can see on a natural level, like human strength, our circumstances, or different things we can control. If we aren’t actively seeking God’s truth and taking care to renew our minds (Rom. 12:2), we can get sucked into thinking that way.

But giving fear our attention is unwise. Real wisdom looks like trusting our Father. He is bigger than anything happening in the world, including everything we could be afraid of (1 John 4:4).

Declarations for Setting the Lord Before You

Here are a few Bible-based declarations for those times when it feels like everything is scary and shaking:

  • “I have set the Lord before me. He is what I see” (Ps. 16:8).

  • “I choose to look at the Lord first—before the fear” (Ps. 16:8).

  • “God is the most important thing in my life, and He says I don’t need to let my heart be troubled” (John 14:1).

  • “The world might be shaking, but I am not shaking, because I trust Him” (Ps. 91:7–10).

  • “My heavenly Father has good plans for my family and me” (Jer. 29:11).

  • “It is wise to trust the Lord” (Prov. 9:10).

  • “The Lord is my choice” (Josh. 24:15).

  • “The Lord will fulfill what concerns me” (Ps. 138:8).

  • “Everything is going to be okay, because He is with me” (Ps. 23).

  • “Everything is going to work out for my good, because that is just what my heavenly Father does” (Rom. 8:28).

Take heart, beloved child of God. Don’t be afraid to set the Lord always before you. Let Him fill your vision until He is bigger than everything else.
