Simple Reminders of God’s Character

In seasons of heartache, waiting, or hopelessness—when it seems like what we want isn’t happening—we need to remember what our heavenly Father is like.

More than we listen to our emotions, more than we listen to the world’s wisdom or opinion—we need to look at the Lord and REMEMBER who He is.

The Lord’s Character

If you’re having trouble remembering what God is like, here are a few descriptions that fit Him well. They are simple reminders of His character. No matter the kind of struggle you’re going through, these points remain true:

  • The Lord is good (Ps. 118:1).

  • He is kind (1 Cor. 13:4).

  • He is faithful (Ps. 31:5).

  • He is the God of hope (Ps. 71:5).

  • He is gentle (Eph. 4:2).

  • He is thoroughly humble (Matt. 11:29).

  • He is tender (Luke 1:78).

  • He is wise (Isa. 28:29).

  • He is patient (1 Cor. 13:4).

  • He is not easily angered (1 Cor. 13:5).

  • He is the God of mercy (Jer. 9:24).

  • He is the God of justice (Jer. 9:24).

  • He is the Righteous One (Jer. 9:24).

  • His character won’t ever change (Jas. 1:17).

  • He is close to those who are hurting (Ps. 34:18).

  • He always protects (1 Cor. 13:7).

  • He always trusts (1 Cor. 13:7).

  • He always keeps going (1 Cor. 13:7).

  • He always loves (2 Chron. 20:21).

  • He defends those who have suffered great loss (Jas. 1:27; Isa. 1:17).

  • He WILL answer those who keep seeking Him (Matt. 7:7–8 TPT).

  • He is good to those who wait for Him (Lam. 3:25).

  • He will act for those who wait for Him (Isa. 64:4).

  • He is your refuge (Ps. 91:2).

  • He is your safe place (Ps. 91:2).

  • He is your strength (Ps. 18:1).

  • He is epically trustworthy (Ps. 18:30).

What God’s Nature Means for You

The descriptions of God in this devotional are shockingly tiny and short when it comes to the One who loves you and is with you and wants to take care of you. He is bigger than we could imagine, even if we had all the time since the creation of the world.

  • God is very, very good—and He wants to show you His goodness. He wants you to see it and know it personally, in your own life.

  • He is wise, and He wants to share His wisdom with you.

  • He is love, and He wants to reassure your heart that you are His treasure.

  • He is hope, and He knows how to fix whatever situation you find yourself in today.

  • He is justice, and He will act according to His justice.

  • He is a warrior, and He will defend you.

  • He shed His own blood for your sins, and He will fight for you when you make mistakes and wrong choices. You are loved, not rejected.

  • He knows the way you should go, and He wants to lead you. The wisdom of God is fire, and His quiet voice carries you forward even when there seems to be no path.

  • He is faithful, and He will act according to His faithfulness in YOUR life.

What Now?

You may want to make a copy of this devotional, print it out or put it on your phone, and go over it every day this week. Declarations of who God is, what He wants to do, and what His heart is like—such statements spoken in faith (believing they are true) are powerful.

You are not alone. The Lord is coming to save you. When you are quiet and trusting in His presence, hearing His voice and His assurances becomes easier.
