Trusting the Lord When You’re VERY Single
Are you single and feeling discouraged?
Have you been waiting a long time to meet the right person…but nothing seems to be happening?
The truth of Scripture applies to dating just as much as it applies to anything else. You can take what the Holy Spirit shows you in Scripture and hold on to it in faith.
Here are four beautiful truths about trusting the Lord with your dating life. Take note of whatever the Holy Spirit tells you as you keep reading.
1. When you trust the Lord, you will experience abundant life even in times when “nothing is happening.”
Read the following passage with this question in mind: “What does this have to do with my dating life?”
Blessed are those who trust in the Lord
and have made the Lord their hope and confidence.
They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit. (Jer. 17:7–8 NLT)
When you trust the Lord with your dating life, you carry His blessing in a special way. Your heart has everything it needs in order to prosper. You aren’t bothered when there’s a “drought” in eligible partners, because you know the Lord is providing and will provide for you. You just happily grow. You’re able to do everything you need to do when you need to do it (“they never stop producing fruit”). You’re able to live the way God made you to live—with abundance, nestled in His loving provision.
2. Choosing to trust the Lord is an act of wisdom. The world has no idea how this works, but it is better to trust God than it is to trust human advice and opinions.
Read the following passages with this question in mind: “How does this apply to dating?”
It is better to trust the Lord
than to trust people. (Ps. 118:8 ICB)
Trust the Lord with all your heart. Don’t depend on your own understanding. (Prov. 3:5 ICB)
Where do you need to let go of other people’s opinions about your dating life and, in a childlike way, simply trust what the Lord is telling you? Where do you need to trust His understanding instead of your own?
3. When you trust the Lord, you have hope for your future.
Read the following passage with this question in mind: “What is the Holy Spirit telling me about dating?”
May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. (Rom. 15:13 ESV)
Trusting the Lord doesn’t look like covering your eyes so you don’t see what’s happening in your life. Trusting Him is the choice to believe what He is saying more than what your circumstances are saying. As you trust Him this way, the outcome will be greater hope. “This is what the Lord is saying, and I know He’s right—because He said it. I know it will happen because He told me it would.”
Trusting in Him results in hope for meeting the right person. Hope for your future marriage. Hope for happiness. Hope for your dreams coming true.
4. The decision to trust God helps remove any anxiety about being single.
Read the following passage with this question in mind: “How does this apply to me as a single person?”
Surely the righteous will never be shaken;
they will be remembered forever.
They will have no fear of bad news;
their hearts are steadfast, trusting in the Lord. (Ps. 112:6–7 NIV)
In her book, Becoming the One, Salomé Roat talks about how important it is to know the Lord and really experience His love for you.
Knowing the Lord that way helps remove the fear of bad news. Jeremiah 29:11 is true for you—His plans for you are good and meant to give you hope. Many believers in Jesus haven’t truly learned to trust Him yet, and this allows for a lot of “what if” questions. “What if God never brings my spouse? What if my dreams don’t matter to Him? What if I’m going to be alone forever?” But there is a heart shift when you know the Lord and trust Him. Those who trust Him will not be shaken.
Don’t be afraid to trust Him, precious child of God! His love for you is extravagant, and He is a trustworthy Father.
