Do you expect God to lead you? Or do you feel like you’re on your own?

A few weeks ago, we posted an interview titled “Finding Love in Unexpected Places.” Our interviewee, Susie, met her husband at a Walmart! She has wonderful things to say about how God leads us:

Don’t ever give up—it can happen anywhere! I met my husband at a Walmart, of all places. I had some lonely years, but I know the Lord was working on both of us and preparing us for one another… Be open to those little whispers that may be the Lord.

No matter what you’re waiting for—your spouse, a new job, a home sale or purchase, a promotion, a word from the Lord—God has a good plan for you. He hasn’t forgotten you, and what you want is important to Him, because He cares for you.

The next chapter in your story could start at anytime, anywhere. Don’t allow the fact that something hasn’t happened yet blind you to the beautiful hope of God that fills the air all around you.

Expect the Lord to guide you. Keep your spiritual ears open to His voice.

How the Lord Leads You

If you feel confused, disoriented, like God isn’t paying attention to your dreams, or like you’re a failure, prayerfully go over the following declarations. Write down the ones that stand out to you, and pray about them over the next week.

  • The Lord doesn’t leave me alone, but He faithfully stays with me and teaches me His truth (Ps. 25:5; Isa. 41:10).

  • He’s with me even when everything is dark around me (Ps. 139:11–12).

  • He reaches out and lays hold of me (Ps. 139:10).

  • He leads me where I need to go (Ps. 139:24).

  • When others come against me, He leads me in His righteousness (Ps. 5:8).

  • In hard, desperate seasons, He leads me to Himself (Ps. 61:2).

  • God brings me into peace and rest (Ps. 23:2).

  • When I ask for help, He hears me. He guides me according to His plan (Gen. 24:12, 27).

  • He leads me well, according to His wise counsel (Ps. 73:24).

  • God’s voice makes me incredibly wise (Ps. 119:98).

  • He’s taken hold of my right hand (Ps. 73:23).

  • He hides me in dangerous times (Ps. 57:1).

  • He has good plans for me. He really, really does (Jer. 29:11).

  • His plans for me are greater than anything I can think of (Eph. 3:20).

  • The Lord causes all things to work out to my good (Rom. 8:28).

What Do You Think?

When we feel lost, confused, or weak at heart, it’s time to focus on the Lord. Here’s an interesting story from Rick Sizemore in his book titled Wilderness: A Stepping Stone to the Greatness of God:

I once traveled to Beirut, Lebanon, during a time of political unrest. After I boarded the plane in Paris, a gentleman from Lebanon sat in the seat next to me. “Why are you going to Beirut?” he asked. “Don’t you know it is dangerous?”

His words began to alarm me; I could feel fear trying to creep into my heart. But then I realized this was a setup from the enemy, meant to keep me from all God wanted to do on this trip, so I allowed my heart to pursue the security of the Lord instead of turning to fear.

It was an interesting trip for me. The instability in Lebanon would have been difficult enough, but I also wasn’t feeling well. Many nights that week, I couldn’t sleep because of the spiritual environment and because I felt so sick physically. Instead, I spent those sleepless hours discovering God’s goodness and security. When I look back on that week, I realize it was one of the sweetest, most revealing times I’ve spent with God in my life. It pressed my faith into the realm of reality. I’m not saying I became this mighty, all-courageous man of God who had no fear, but during that season, I had a deep revelation of my need and desire for Him.

Wherever you are right now—physically or spiritually—God is with you, and He will comfort you in strange times, and He will guide you. He is wonderfully trustworthy, and your heart means so much to Him.

When things are difficult and you don’t know what to do, get to know your Father. He has a way of turning bad times into precious times, and you can trust Him to lead you faithfully.
