Some of us really struggle to understand how KIND God really is.

Any type of self-hatred, even something that seems small and insignificant, can work against our understanding of His kindness.

This week, spend some time thinking about the kindness of God. Not just how He’s kind to other people, but how He is actively kind toward you. This God—the One who built the stars and whose voice makes the mountains tremble—is soft and gentle toward you.

If your heart hesitates where His kindness is concerned, or if you feel like maybe He hasn’t been kind to you, try to put your questions aside as you read the following Scriptures. What if every verse in this devotion is true for you? What if His kindness is actually for you, and you just need to see it more clearly? Try to read with that mindset.

1. He’s Better Than You Can Imagine

Let everyone give all their praise and thanks to the Lord!
Here’s why—he’s better than anyone could ever imagine.
Yes, he’s always loving and kind, and his faithful love never ends. (Ps. 107:1 TPT)

Based on Psalm 107:1, here are a few things that are true about you and your heavenly Father:

  • The Lord is better than any picture you could come up with. He’s better yet.

  • He always loves you.

  • He is constant, endless love that isn’t afraid of your mistakes and doesn’t reject you when you mess up.

  • He is always kind toward you.

  • His love is faithful toward you.

What stands out to you in this passage? What do you think God is saying? Journal your thoughts.

2. His Kindness Is Astounding

So lift your hands and give thanks to God for his marvelous kindness
and for his miracles of mercy for those he loves!
For he smashed through heavy prison doors and
shattered the steel bars that held us back, just to set us free! (Ps. 107:15–16 TPT)

He breaks down gates of bronze
and cuts through bars of iron. (Ps. 107:16 NIV)

Based on Psalm 107:15–16, here are a few things that are true about you and your heavenly Father:

  • His kindness toward you is incredible. You can always expect Him to be kind toward you.

  • He does amazing, spectacular things on your behalf.

  • When you are in trouble and it’s your own fault, even then He doesn’t leave you in your mess. He steps in and saves you.

  • What seems impossible to you does not intimidate Him whatsoever.

  • When you need to be rescued, He’s the One. He’s the Rescuer.

What stands out to you in this passage? What stirs your heart? Journal your thoughts.

3. His Kindness Is Your Shelter

The Lord rescues the godly;
he is their fortress in times of trouble.
The Lord helps them,
    rescuing them from the wicked.
He saves them,
and they find shelter in him. (Ps. 37:39–40 NLT)

Based on Psalm 37:39–40, here are a few things that are true about you and your heavenly Father:

  • The Lord, the Rescuer.

  • In times of attack, when your heart is struggling, He is your fortress.

  • In times of anxiety, when you’re in desperate need of kindness, He is your safe place.

  • The Lord is with you to help you. Don’t let doubt or fear tell you otherwise. If you don’t believe He’s kind where you’re concerned, ask the Holy Spirit to tell you what He’s thinking.

  • God is obviously for you.

  • The Lord is right here so you can find shelter in Him. It doesn’t matter if you feel undeserving—He still wants to be your shelter.

What stands out to you in this passage? What makes your heart sit up and shout, “YES!”? Journal your thoughts.
