Declarations for When You’re Lonely

The holidays can be a difficult time for those who are dealing with loss, grief, or discouragement. Married or single, this season can be a time of deep-seated loneliness for people.

If you’re struggling with loneliness, know we’re praying for you! This week at BTO, we’re asking God to comfort your heart and show you in a special way how much He’s with you and how He loves you.

Here are three Bible-based statements that are true for you today:

1. I declare God’s mighty love for me! I speak it loudly over my life. I invite His love to permeate every part of my being: all my thoughts, all my feelings, every area of my heart, all my dreams, and every sore spot within me that still needs to be healed. I want to know the love of God!

Let the [spoken] word of Christ have its home within you [dwelling in your heart and mind—permeating every aspect of your being] as you teach [spiritual things] and admonish and train one another with all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs with thankfulness in your hearts to God. (Col. 3:16 AMP)

Pay attention to the beautiful invitation contained in the first sentence of that passage: Let the word of Christ have its HOME within you. That is an amazing picture of what God wants to do with you—He wants to come and have His home inside you, to be with you to that measure, to comfort you and live with you.

God isn’t pushing you away. He doesn’t have a list of sins He’s holding against you (Col. 2:14). Instead, He wants to be so close to you that you are His home.

2. I declare I have great value in God’s sight, and He hasn’t forgotten about me. I will put all my trust in Him and believe His Word, which says His plans for me are good.

Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? And not one of them is forgotten before God. Why, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not; you are of more value than many sparrows. (Luke 12:6–7 ESV)

Even at your worst, even when your emotions are screaming, when your heart is filled with despair or anger—you are loved, treasured, and considered a holy prize (Col. 3:12).

When we’re struggling with loneliness, discouragement, or a similar emotion, we have to remind ourselves of what is true. “I’m a child of God! He has not deserted me. He hasn’t cut me off or forgotten about my hopes and dreams. He treasures me and I am intensely valuable to Him!”

3. I am surrounded by the peace of God! It is a constant in my life. His peace is my home, the way I think, and the blanket for my soul.

Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27 NIV)

You were made for the peace of God. Jesus has given you His peace—He’s actually shared His own peace with you.

If you don’t feel His peace today, run to Him. Focus your thoughts on Him, and don’t “allow” your heart to cling to your fears. Set those fears in His hands and refuse to pick them up again.

The next time a familiar fear knocks on your door, declare, “I’ve given this fear to God. I don’t hold it anymore and it’s not my responsibility. He is going to take care of it for me.”

Bill Johnson says, “Don’t underestimate peace; it’s the manifestation of God’s mind over you. He’s not nervous about anything.”

Here’s our prayer for you this week:

Dear heavenly Father:

In Your Word, You promise You will never leave us or forsake us. Thank You that we can take this promise to the bank! We can trust You to hold on, no matter what.

For our readers who are struggling with loneliness during the holiday season, we ask that You would comfort their hearts and fill them up to such an extent that they can rejoice in all things. True rejoicing—real rejoicing. May they be filled with incredible hope and joy!

Before you go!

Here’s an interesting thought about loneliness and the truth of Jesus. Do you have any beliefs about being alone that might need to change?

One Friday night, I received a call from a student in our campus ministry. She told me she was struggling with intense feelings of loneliness. I asked what she was doing, and she said she was sitting in her dorm room watching her friends go out on dates. During our conversation, she realized her feelings of loneliness were coming from the conclusions she had in her heart about being alone. The truth of the matter was that she was not alone—Jesus was with her. As she dealt with the belief in her heart, the loneliness started to subside.

In that example, my friend’s thoughts were focused on the fact that she was not “with” anyone; because of her focus, she was dealing with loneliness. In that moment, this was the question she needed to answer: “What is hindering your heart from focusing on the truth that Jesus is with you?”
