Prayers and Declarations for Dealing with Grief

Last week Becoming the One published our interview with Amy, who lost her husband to cancer four years ago. [You can read her interview here.]

Amy knows what grief is like, and she had some amazing things to say:

Grief changes your heart. It can make it hard or it can make it softer, deeper. If you let it make you softer, it allows God to do beautiful things with you and through you for others. It allows Him to take your wounds and heal them and turn your scars to gold.

Whatever you are grieving today, the part of your life that is painful and hard, missing or seemingly destroyed—God wants to draw close to you and turn those sore, aching places into gold.

He knows how to take painful things and work them out in your favor, so your life is filled with blessings instead (Rom. 8:28).

Think about the following verses. What do they say about you? What do they say about your loving heavenly Father and the situation you’re going through? Write down what the Lord tells you through these Scriptures.

The Lord Is Close to the Brokenhearted

The Lord is near to the brokenhearted
And saves those who are crushed in spirit. (Ps. 34:18 NASB)

  • The Lord is close to you in this season of grief.

  • He’s with you in a special, tender way right now.

  • He is going to save you.

A simple prayer when your heart is broken: Father, please open my eyes to see how You are with me today.

Those Who Mourn Will Be Comforted

Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted. (Matt. 5:4 NIV)

  • This grief is not the end of what God is doing with you. It isn’t even close to the end!

  • Substantial, weighty blessing is coming.

  • You WILL be comforted. That’s a promise from Jesus.

A simple prayer when you’re mourning: Jesus, I come to You for comfort. I keep my heart open to You, and I listen to hear Your voice.

Jesus Wants to Carry Your Pain

Surely He has borne our griefs
And carried our sorrows. (Isa. 53:4 NKJV)

  • You aren’t alone, even when it seems like you are.

  • God is not far from you.

  • Jesus Himself is inside your grief with you. He is carrying it for you.

A simple prayer when you feel overcome with heartache: Lord, thank You that I don’t have to go through this without You. I know You are here with me.

What Can You Do in Times of Pain and Grief?

Bill Frisbie, a leader at the Northwest Gathering Center, recently posted the following. His article is about overcoming fear, but it applies to times of intense grief as well:

Learning how to overcome might sound like a big and difficult process, but it’s actually pretty simple. We overcome by opening the door and inviting Jesus into the thing we’re struggling with…

Carve out some time to be quiet with the Lord, to be honest with Him, and to open the door of your heart to Him.

As a result of your simple response to His knock, He will so transform you that one day you might look back and say, “Wow. I used to be really fearful, but I’m not afraid anymore. I’ve learned to trust the Lord.”

Invite Jesus into your pain. That is exactly where He wants to be—so close to you, so present in your life, that you don’t need to take a single step without Him. He can even help you breathe. He is with you LIKE THAT, and it’s where He wants to be, caring for you and carrying all your burdens. That is how much He loves you.

Grief and other hard times have a way of helping us see God at a depth that revives us all the way through to our bones.

I have heard of You by the hearing of the ear;
But now my eye sees You. (Job 42:5)
