What Is the Lord Saying About Your Dreams?

Do you expect the Lord to “notice” the desires of your heart? Or, deep down, do you think the Lord doesn’t care about those desires?

Some of us have trouble trusting Him with our dreams because we think He doesn’t like them or He might ask us to give them up.

“How can I trust Him with this? This thing means so much to my heart! He probably wants me to be a missionary in a third-world country. Or He probably wants me to live in poverty for the rest of my life. If I choose to put this dream in His hands, I might not ever see it again.”

But here’s the thing. The Lord cares about our heart (Pr. 4:23), and our dreams are part of our heart. The human heart is so dear to the Lord that if we really saw how much He loves it, I think we would be stunned.

Journaling the Lord’s Heart

If you’re having trouble trusting the Lord with the desires of your heart, spend some time with Him today and ask Him what He’s thinking about these things.

Grab your journal, go to a quiet and peaceful location, and meditate on the following verses. Ask the Lord how they apply to you, and write down what He says—or even what you think He MIGHT be saying. Don’t allow doubt or fear to make you question what you feel like He’s saying.

(If you have trouble with this exercise, see our note below.)

Verse #1: Utmost Delight

Make God the utmost delight and pleasure of your life,
and he will provide for you what you desire the most. (Ps. 37:4 TPT)

To get you started: What is the Lord saying to you about this verse?

Verse #2: My Pleasure and Portion

Lord, I have chosen you alone as my inheritance.
You are my prize, my pleasure, and my portion.
I leave my destiny and its timing in your hands. (Ps. 16:5)

To get you started: What is God’s heart for you and your destiny?

Verse #3: The Heart’s Desire

Lord, because of your strength the king is strong.
Look how he rejoices in you!
He bursts out with a joyful song because of your victory!

For you have given him his heart’s desire,
anything and everything he asks for.
You haven’t withheld a thing from your betrothed one. (Ps. 21:1–2)

To get you started: What does God tell you about this passage and His plans for you?

What If You Feel Like You Can’t Hear Him?

If you have trouble hearing the Lord’s voice, ask Him to help you.

His voice can come in many different ways. It can sound like a thought or an impression inside you. You might see a picture in your mind’s eye or start to feel a certain way (for example, like you’re sitting on the Lord’s lap). God may speak to you through your imagination. It can feel like you’re making it up, but it’s actually something more.

Hearing Him takes faith (Heb. 11:6). This means we could talk ourselves out of it if we wanted to. The brain might say, “I think I’m making this up,” even as the spirit says, “This is the Lord!” In those times, we need to be led by the Holy Spirit instead of by doubt or the fear we might get it wrong.

So—go forth and hear Him boldly! Trust Him to guide you, and trust that His heart is for you even on your worst days when you feel like a failure. Emotions fluctuate, but His heart toward you will never change. His heart is the rock of your life.
