Covenant: The Flame That Won’t Go Out

Greetings from Becoming the One!
Dear Becoming the One Family,
This month at Becoming the One, we’re exploring what real love looks like, not the kind we see in movies or hear described in love songs—but a love that runs deep and stays committed no matter what. A love like God’s. After all, we can love our spouse only because the Lord loved us first (1 John 4:19).
In chapter 5 of my book, Becoming the One, we dive into the idea of covenant. For those of us who grew up in church, that word might be familiar, but what does it really mean?
What is a practical description that applies to our becoming the one right now?
In the Bible, a covenant was a sacred promise—an unbreakable agreement between God and His people. It wasn’t casual. It wasn’t fair weather. It didn’t change its mind later. It was serious, and holy, and good, and built on mutual trust and commitment.
The biblical idea of covenant is at the heart of marriage. When we bring Jesus into our marriage covenant—not just as a guest but as the foundation of our commitment—we’re saying “yes” to a love that lasts. Jesus is fully in. He’s our strength, our Protector, our wisdom, and the literal glue that holds us together (Col. 1:17).
Jesus gave everything so we could experience love the way God always intended: intimate, lasting, and full of purpose. That isn’t a description of some ideal marriage far away from you—it is what He offers you, for your marriage.
God invites us to make Him part of our marriage. And when we say “yes,” we’re choosing to trust Him to hold us together. He is always faithful, so we can be confident that our marriage will last. God doesn’t walk away. He isn’t going to let go of our marriage—He is going to work miracles.
Leon and I love the following passage! We actually used these words in our wedding ceremony. What a wonderful description of covenant—not just our covenant with each other but our covenant with our loving heavenly Father as well.
Place me like a seal over your heart,
like a seal on your arm;
for love is as strong as death,
its jealousy unyielding as the grave.
It burns like blazing fire,
like a mighty flame.
Many waters cannot quench love;
rivers cannot sweep it away.
If one were to give
all the wealth of one’s house for love,
it would be utterly scorned. (Songs 8:6–7 NIV)
Now that’s an epic love story.
May God bless you! We’re honored to join you in growing in love and deepening our understanding of the amazing, wonderful, beautiful, healing heart of God.
In His love,
Leon and Salomé for the Becoming the One Team
