Have a Financially Healthy Marriage!

Photo by Jonathan Borba

One of the greatest causes of divorce in the United States is money, but that is not the will of God for you. It doesn’t line up with what the Bible says about money and financial matters.

Finances are a blessing from the Lord, and financial matters can be a great way to experience His peace in your marriage. When God gives a blessing, which money is, He gives no sorrow with it:

The blessing of the Lord makes one rich,
And He adds no sorrow with it. (Prov. 10:22 NKJV)

That is what God wants to do for you, your marriage, and your bank account. He wants to bless you abundantly—and in such a way that you don’t experience any sorrow.

If that is God’s heart for finances, why do many people have financial problems?

Money is full of sorrow for most people! Why? Because they don’t understand how to use money. They don’t know how to steward this blessing from the Lord.

Part of becoming more like Jesus means realizing God has called us to be good stewards of everything He has given us, including our finances.

Here at BTO, we talk about three main things:

1.  Loving God and receiving His love,

2.  Healing from past traumas, and

3.  Understanding your identity in Jesus.

These interconnected principles don’t only prepare us for marriage, but they also lead to financial health and prosperity according to Scripture.

Let’s look briefly at each of these three pillars and how they relate to money.

Loving God and Receiving His Love

Loving God is essential for financial health because it is linked with the assurance that He will provide for us and support us financially. He is the One who gives us financial security. We don’t ever have to worry about His provision, because He lavishly gives us the gifts, resources, and everything else we need to succeed.

Our love for God manifests in three things:

1.  Giving, which is an act of beautiful worship;

2.  Gratitude, where we are thankful for all the things God has given us; and

3.  Responsibility or good stewardship, where we take care of everything God has entrusted to us (Gen. 1:28).

With abundance comes greater responsibility.

Healing from Past Traumas

To be responsible with God’s gifts, including finances, we need to overcome negative financial mindsets and past issues. Just as this kind of healing is vital in dating and marriage, it is also vital in financial matters.

We need to change our mindset from “This money is mine” to “This money belongs to the Lord, and I need to steward it according to His will.” A stewardship mindset acknowledges that our loving heavenly Father enables us to produce wealth (Deut. 8:18). The ability to make money comes from Him, so we honor Him with the wealth He Himself gives us. This opens the door to experience His abundance.

Understanding Your Identity in Jesus

Recognizing your true identity in Jesus is a foundation for financial wellness. Instead of identifying with poverty or financial struggles, you identify with Him.

If we identify with poverty or financial struggles, we are choosing an identity that is not who we really are. But identifying with Jesus shifts our perspective from poverty to a life of abundance and honor.

Humility is the fear of the Lord;
    its wages are riches and honor and life. (Prov. 22:4 NIV)

When we think of ourselves according to our true identity in Jesus, we become able to experience the “wages” of humility: blessing and abundance.
