Do You Need to Fast Fear?

How many choices do you make each day because of fear? Have you ever thought about it?

“It’s impossible for me to do this. I’ll never do this.”

“I can’t believe God for this thing because what if it doesn’t happen?”

“I can’t go there. It isn’t safe.”

Fear imprisons people and keeps them from being able to do or accept the good things their loving heavenly Father has for them.

What would a life without fear look like for you? If you were to “fast” fear for a week, how would your life be different?

What would your heart feel like if it were no longer weighed down by fear?

Here are two reasons to consider fasting fear this week.

Reason #1 to fast fear: You want the truth, not lies.

The only fear that tells the truth is the fear of the Lord. This type of fear doesn’t harm you. It actually causes you to get healthier, and it fills you with wisdom.

The world’s version of fear does the opposite. It doesn’t bring life and health, and it actually takes away wisdom. This type of fear is a liar; it tells you things that are not real.

That is a big reason to consider going on a fear fast—because you want to live according to God’s truth.

Reason #2 to fast fear: God is with you strongly.

When you’re struggling with fear, one of the most important things to remember is that God is with you in a big way, not in a small way.

  • You aren’t in this situation by yourself.

  • You don’t have to have all the answers.

  • You don’t have to say all the right things and do all the right things, so you can have the right outcome.

God is with you strongly. If the opposite seems true, you are probably looking at fear, and you need to “look” at God.

  • What is He saying about your situation?

  • What has He promised you?

  • What does the Bible say about trusting Him?

Our faith grows as we look at Jesus (Heb. 12:2).

If you fasted fear this week, what would it look like?

What would you say if you had no fear?

What would you do if you had no fear?

Would you stay in your current job, or would you go after your dream job?

If you’re single, would you ask someone out on a date?

If you’re dating, how would your love increase if fear were no longer allowed to stand in the way of your heart?

What would you do as a hobby if you weren’t afraid?

Ask the Holy Spirit to help you think and live without fear. Then practice fasting fear this week—try it out and see what happens.

Your heavenly Father doesn’t want you to live bound up by fear. He has something better for you—a truly amazing life where you are able to trust Him in everything and relax in His love for you.

Your heavenly Father loves you more than you realize! Check out these other devotions:
