Finding Rest in a Humble God

The Christmas season often overflows with activities and family gatherings, leaving little room to pause and breathe. In the midst of all the busyness, it’s easy to find ourselves struggling to quiet our heart and connect with the Holy Spirit—the very thing that makes the season meaningful!

This week’s devotion is an invitation to spend a few minutes sitting quietly with the Lord. One of the best ways to reconnect with Him is to remember who He is. “This is what He is like!”

So, here is just one of the ways the Bible describes Him.

He is the humble God.

Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. (Eph. 4:2 NIV)

Ephesians 4:2 is not just a helpful instruction for believers, but it is a beautiful description of who God is. God wouldn’t instruct us to be or do something He is not, and so verses like this one help us see what He is like:

  • He is humble. The Passion Translation says His humility is tender.

  • He is gentle.

  • He is incredibly patient with us (more than we expect Him to be).

  • He bears with us. He understands us—why we do what we do—and He does not condemn us.

What does it mean to have a humble God?

Because God is humble, we get to relax and rest (see Matt. 11:28–29). We don’t have to be afraid of making mistakes or falling short. His pride is not hurt when we mess up. He won’t lash out or be petty when we try to tell Him what we’re feeling.

Instead, He will bear with us in love. On a daily basis, this means we get to be fearless. It is okay for us to learn and grow at our own pace. It’s okay to make mistakes! We don’t need to do everything flawlessly, nor do we need to condemn ourselves when we react badly or make a wrong choice.

Why not? Because God is humble, and He loves us. We are fully, 100% accepted, and we get to live life with Him in peace and joy as we learn His ways.

Especially at this time of year, that can be a wonderful thing to remember.

This Christmas season, here is a promise to hold in your heart:

The humble-hearted will inherit the land;
    they will take pleasure in its peace and enjoy its abundance. (Ps. 37:11 VOICE)

Humility has amazing rewards! Choosing humility—being like Jesus—means Psalm 37:11: You will inherit the land, take pleasure in its peace, and enjoy its abundance. What does that mean for you and your family? Think about it with the Holy Spirit, and take note of what He shows you.
