How God’s Faithfulness Affects Your Dating Relationship

Do you ever pause and consider how God’s faithfulness plays a role in your relationship? Most of us are familiar with the concept of His faithfulness, but we don’t necessarily think to apply it to our dating life.

The faithfulness of God is more than just understanding that He will do what He promised. Faithfulness is His heart. His faithfulness is why we can relax when we’re dating someone and trust that everything will be okay in the end. His faithfulness is why we can have peace in a relationship and be content.

Here are a few thoughts about the faithfulness of God and how it applies specifically to dating.

How His Faithfulness Can Affect Your Anxiety

For Yahweh is always good and ready to receive you.
He’s so loving that it will amaze you—
so kind that it will astound you!
And he is famous for his faithfulness toward all.
Everyone knows our God can be trusted,
for he keeps his promises to every generation! (Ps. 100:5 TPT)

If you deal with relational anxiety, understanding the faithfulness of God will comfort your heart and strengthen the areas where you feel weak. His faithfulness has the ability to lead you out of the darkness and into the sunlight, where you can see more clearly.

When we really start to understand who God is and that He will be faithful with us, we also start to understand how safe it is to trust Him. All our fears about dating suddenly run into the massive, glorious “wall” of His faithfulness—this force field of His goodness and power and steadiness and favor (Ps. 5:12). We start to understand that He will help us because that’s what He does. That’s what He’s like, and we can always, always expect Him to be faithful.

Declaration: “All I know is the faithfulness of God.”

His Faithfulness Can Carry Your Burdens

How good you are to me!
When people turn to you, Yahweh,
they discover how easy you are to please—so faithful and true!
Joyfully you teach them the proper path,
even when they go astray. (Ps. 25:8 TPT)

Give your burdens to the Lord,

and he will take care of you.

He will not permit the godly to slip and fall. (Ps. 55:22 NLT)

When we understand how faithful God is, we start to realize we can trust Him with the burdens (fears, worries, concerns, wounds) we’re carrying in our dating relationship.

  • “I don’t know how this is going to work out.”

  • “We don’t have enough money to get married. I don’t know what we’re going to do.”

  • “This person has a different sexual history than I do; what does God think about that?”

  • “How do I know if this person is the right one for me?”

Applying the faithfulness of the Lord to a dating relationship helps us recognize that we don’t need to carry our burdens by ourselves. We get to bring them to the Lord, and He will faithfully carry them for us. We don’t need to worry or be afraid or build up our defenses—because He’s going to take care of these burdens for us and keep us from falling. He will show us the way.

When we become aware of how faithful He really is, we open the door to His peace. It just washes over us. “Oh! I can trust Him, can’t I? He is a part of this relationship, which means He has the inside scoop on what’s going on. He wants to talk to me about this. He wants to guide me, just like His Word says. I get to trust Him with this relationship, and I know it’s going to be okay no matter what.”

Declaration: “God has been faithful with me already, and He will be faithful with me now.”

He Is Tested and True

For every word Yahweh speaks is sure and reliable.
His truth is tested, found to be flawless, and ever faithful.
It’s as pure as silver refined seven times in a crucible of clay. (Ps. 12:6 TPT)

Where do you need to “notice” the faithfulness of God in your relationship? Where are you afraid? Where do you feel uncertain?

Write down a specific fear you’re dealing with in your relationship, and give it to the Lord. Ask Him to tell you the truth about that fear, and be on the lookout for His answer—because He is faithful.
