Trusting God with Your Worry

When we’re worried about something, it can be easy to “fall out” of trust in the Lord without realizing it. We know in our head that trust is important, but the inside of us is full of doubt:

“I hope God comes through for me, but how do I know for sure He will help me?”

“Does God listen to my prayers? I can’t tell. Whenever I try to pray, it’s like nothing happens.”

“What if God doesn’t bring me my spouse? I could be single forever!”

When we are worried, the Lord is tender toward us. He doesn’t reject us because we are struggling, but He comes alongside us and quietly, gently reminds us:

“Hey, you can trust Me. I really am trustworthy. You are going to see My goodness. You are going to make it. I won’t let go of you. Right now you see what you are afraid of, but if you will turn your focus to Me, you will see My goodness and know everything is going to be okay.”

The Head/Heart Conundrum

There is a difference between trusting God with our head (because we know we’re “supposed to”) and actually, genuinely trusting Him with our heart.

David was now in great danger because all his men were very bitter about losing their sons and daughters, and they began to talk of stoning him. But David found strength in the Lord his God. (1 Sam. 30:6 NLT)

When we trust God, the “what if” questions grow quiet, and we have peace instead of worry. We know everything is going to be okay—because He is with us, and He is involved, and He loves us so much. Like David, we “find our strength” in Him again.

If you ever recognize you aren’t trusting God as much as you could be, don’t feel condemned. Instead, realize the truth: There is hope.

Taking Your Worry to God

Think of something worrying you. Maybe you need a new job. Maybe you have a big deadline coming up, and you don’t know if you’ll be able to meet it. Maybe you want to find the right person and get married, but you’re as single as the desert is dry.

Whatever the worry is, spend a few minutes with the Holy Spirit. Ask Him these questions:

  • “What are You saying about this thing that’s bothering me?”

  • “What do You want me to know about this?”

  • “What does trusting You look like in this situation?”

Make a note of anything He tells you. He might just tenderly remind you, “You really can trust Me.”

Sometimes those words are all we need to find our peace again. “Oh! You truly are taking care of me, aren’t You?”

You, beloved child of God, are going to see His goodness. Whatever your worry, take courage—because He is coming to save you. He is not going to pass you by. He hasn’t forgotten about you. You aren’t going to miss His goodness.

As you trust Him with this worry, He will step in and change your world—maybe in small ways, maybe in big ones. However He does it, your heart will know His peace all over again.

What are you worried about? Send us your prayer request so we can pray for you! God loves you so much, and His goodness and mercy are chasing you down (Ps. 23).
