Why You Need to Keep Reminding Yourself of Who You Are

If you feel heavy and overwhelmed, it’s good to go back and review what God says about you.

If you feel like a failure in your relationship, go find what He says in Scripture, because that is what you actually are. You are only what the Lord says.

If you feel like your world is falling apart, go remember who you are in Jesus. What has He told you about you and your calling? What has He told you about your future?

If you feel like you’re not good enough—for God, for your significant other, for your dreams, for your job—then you need to review what God thinks of you. If He says you’re good enough, then you are good enough. The Bible is filled with truths about how much He thinks you are good enough.

If you’re struggling in your dating life, purposefully remember who you are in Jesus.

Let’s look at a few verses from Scripture that talk about who you are and what God is doing in your life.

You may want to print off this list and revisit it every day this week. Don’t let the enemy convince you that some lie is true—remember what God has said.

1. Remember, the Lord has set you up to succeed. He has made you strong and powerful from the inside out.

God didn’t give us a cowardly spirit but a spirit of power, love, and good judgment. (2 Tim. 1:7 NOG)

Here are some conclusions we can make based on God’s Word:

  • “I am powerful, not weak or cowardly.”

  • “I love God and others well.”

  • “I think well. I have a sound mind.”

  • “I am not a failure in my relationship.”

2. Remember, incredible wisdom is available to you for your dating life. You can go to God whenever you have questions.

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all men liberally and without criticism, and it will be given to him. (Jas. 1:5 MEV)

Here are some conclusions we can make based on God’s Word:

  • “The wisdom of heaven is open to me and my relationship.”

  • “God answers me every time I ask Him for wisdom about what to do.”

  • “I am wiser than the world thinks I should be, because I think according to the wisdom of God.”

3. Remember, you are more than your weaknesses and shortcomings. They are things that are passing.

How much more do I need to say? It would take too long to recount the stories of the faith of Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and all the prophets. By faith these people overthrew kingdoms, ruled with justice, and received what God had promised them. They shut the mouths of lions, quenched the flames of fire, and escaped death by the edge of the sword. Their weakness was turned to strength. They became strong in battle and put whole armies to flight. (Heb. 11:32–34 NLT)

Here are some conclusions we can make based on God’s Word:

  • “The things I struggle with today are not permanent.”

  • “God is turning my weaknesses into strength.”

  • “I am going to see God move on my behalf in my relationship.”

4. Remember, you are stronger than you think. You are strong because Jesus is strong. Your strength is His strength, and nothing can defeat His strength.

So don’t worry, because I am with you.
Don’t be afraid, because I am your God.
I will make you strong and will help you.
I will support you with my right hand that saves you. (Isa. 41:10 ICB)

Here are some conclusions we can make based on God’s Word:

  • “I don’t need to worry in my relationship.”

  • “I never need to be afraid in my relationship.”

  • “I am stronger than I think, because God is helping me.”

  • “I am not alone in my relationship. The Lord is supporting me.”

This next week…

Set aside some time to sit with the Lord, your Bible, and your journal. Ask God to tell you who you are, and then read one of the Psalms or one of Jesus’ parables. When a verse stands out to you, look at it closely. What does it say about God? What does it say about you? Pray about it, and write down what you sense the verse reveals about your identity as God’s beloved child.
