Shame and Fear vs. the Power of Jesus’ Blood

Several years ago, I was a different person. Even though I outwardly projected that I was a loving, happy young woman, I was struggling on the inside. Fear and tension crawled through me, and I felt unsatisfied and unhappy. I knew I was made for justice, and I wanted to help make the earth a better place, but I didn’t have a way of discovering my true purpose and this was hard for me.

But all that changed when I met Jesus—the real Jesus, not just who I thought He was. Job in the Old Testament said it beautifully:

My ears had heard of you
but now my eyes have seen you. (42:5 NIV)

That’s what it was like for me—I met Him as He really is and everything changed.

Here are a few powerful truths about Jesus, His blood, and who you are in Him. When you feel afraid, oppressed, or like you’re on the verge of hopelessness, repeat these truths out loud. Find them in Scripture and declare them over your life.

1. No matter what you’re struggling with, the precious blood of Jesus is enough.

One of the greatest things I’ve discovered in my walk with God is the truth of His blood. While I was writing Becoming the One, He put in my heart a strong desire to study and meditate on the power of His blood.

He’s been so gentle and tender with my heart that just thinking about His blood brings tears to my eyes—tears of joy and thankfulness toward the God of the universe, who gave His one and only Son so we could have eternal life.

Today pause for a moment, and ask yourself if you really understand what that means.

  • You get to run out of the pain and shame and into His arms.

  • You get to look at Him instead of all your fears. He wants to carry those things FOR you.

  • You get to have peace in storms.

  • You get to rest your head on His heart and know He’s taking care of you.

2. The blood of Jesus removes sin and shame, and it boldly speaks the words of life.

It’s amazing how people can come to Jesus and truly change! The old is simply gone, washed away forever, and a new creation wakes up in its place. Easter is the proclamation of who God is and how He loved you enough to make a way for you to come to Him, just as you are, and know real life.

The following verse gives me hope every day—hope for my loved ones and for the people I’m praying for:

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! (2 Cor. 5:17)

The Lord is faithful and will never back out of the covenant He made with you. He is the party fully committed to this covenant, and He remains faithful to it even when we do not.

3. You are clean because of the blood of Jesus.

We no longer have to carry the weight of our mistakes, shortcomings, and wrong choices. All those things are wiped away forever, and we get to live with the greatest hope and the deepest joy.

Because of Jesus, you are totally, completely new and not the same person you were before. You get to be who Jesus says you are—a person of power, love, and a sound mind. You’ve been washed clean before Him, and He sees you as righteous.

4. The darkness cannot hold you. Jesus has set you free.

Isaiah 1:18 makes it clear that Jesus’ blood sets us free and allows us to overcome the power of darkness:

“Come now, let us settle the matter,”
says the Lord.
“Though your sins are like scarlet,
they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red as crimson,
they shall be like wool.”

When He died on the cross, Jesus expressed His unique and perfect love for you. His sinless, spotless life became a ransom for your sins. So all those things you regret and feel shame over, all the times when you know you’ve fallen short—He took all those things, and they were nailed to the cross. His death brought you life.

This means:

  • You are forgiven.

  • You are holy and dear to Him.

  • You are the righteousness of God.

  • The old is gone.

  • There is no shame or condemnation for you.

  • You get to be the hero/heroine He’s called you to be!

5. You can rest in God. He’s done it all for you, and now you just get to live in His love.

Jesus is the One who loves us most. He proved it by giving His life for us, and on Easter we celebrate His act that took us out of darkness forever and brought us into the light.

I want to invite you to take communion, either by yourself or with a loved one. Come to Jesus once again with a surrendered heart full of repentance, love, and renewed sensitivity to His covenant of life for you.

Take the bread and the cup, and believe with all your heart that His death pays the penalty of your sins, no matter how big or little they are. Sin is sin, and His perfect righteousness is freely given to you in exchange for your unrighteousness.

May this Easter weekend be the beginning of a wonderful, empowering season for you—because of Jesus and what He’s doing.

Arise and shine, because your light has come. May your relationships be full of light, and may your marriage be a testimony of God’s love to the world. May your heart always delight in Jesus, your Savior and Healer. He loves you more than you know!
