Declarations to Help You Conquer Shame

Shame blocks our eyes and keeps us from knowing the truth.

It’s like a mud pit. When we’re stuck in shame, we don’t know which way is up, let alone what the sun looks like or how beautiful God made the world around us.

This week at BTO, we’re praying that you come face to face with how much God loves you! Don’t listen to the voice of shame any longer—but run to God to find healing for the aching places inside you.

Here are three Bible-based statements that are true for you today:

1. I know and believe the love God has for me! It isn’t just for other people—it is FOR ME right now, exactly where I am in my life. It is perfect and it is FOR ME.

We have come to know and have believed the love which God has for us. God is love, and the one who abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. (1 John 4:16 NASB)

Shame will try to keep you a prisoner in the mud pit when Jesus has set you free. You are no longer trapped in the darkness because of sins and past mistakes—you were remade and now dwell in the light.

If you can’t feel God’s love for you today, maybe you need to go spend a few minutes in His presence, reconnecting with His heart.

  1. What does He say to you when you quiet yourself and just listen?

  2. What does His peace feel like?

  3. Choose a Bible verse that talks about His love and apply it directly to yourself. “This is what God says about ME. He loves me and has chosen me to be His very own!”

2. I declare I am completely free of condemnation! Jesus does not condemn me—He wipes the slate clean and invites me to step even deeper into His heart.

Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

“No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.” (John 8:10–11 NLT)

Jesus is holy and righteous at a level we don’t really understand. He knows “the law” better than anyone, and yet in John 8 He didn’t write this woman off. He didn’t say, “Sorry—you’ve just messed up too badly this time.”

He simply and beautifully did not condemn this woman who, according to the law, should have been condemned. That’s how God loves you, too. Shame wants to kill, but Jesus came to bring YOU abundant life!

3. I accept my righteous standing with God the Father! HIS righteousness has become MY righteousness! I am perfectly innocent in His sight. Jesus Himself stands before Father God speaking well of me.

My dear children, I am writing this to you so that you will not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate who pleads our case before the Father. He is Jesus Christ, the one who is truly righteous. (1 John 2:1 NLT)

God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Cor. 5:21 NIV)

Jesus is incredibly holy. One day EVERY knee will bow and EVERY tongue will confess He is Lord (Phil. 2:9–10)

Yet this holy, righteous God doesn’t condemn us—He fights for us. He gets down on our level so He can hold us up with His arms.

Here’s the simple truth:

If you’ve repented, that sin is gone. You’re forgiven—that’s it (1 John 1:9). Every time shame tries to whisper to you, remember it doesn’t tell the truth. You are a child of God, He loves you so much, He’s forgiven you, and He calls you righteous.

Here’s our prayer for you this week:

Father God,

We ask that You would meet our readers’ hearts this week in a special way. You see every area of brokenness and want to bring healing. No one can snatch Your children out of Your hand!

Please open their eyes to the truth of Your heart. Help them to see, hear, feel, and deeply experience Your love for them. Your love changes everything, and we know You have incredible plans for our readers—including those men and women who feel like everything is lost and ruined.

You are the God of hope, and You never fall short. Not a single time.

Before you go!

Dr. Henry Cloud, co-author of the well-known Boundaries book, says this about shame:

The opposite of “bad” is not “good.” The opposite of bad is “loved.” When you are loved, feelings of badness will become a non-issue.

Child of God, you are SO VERY LOVED! Today if you feel lost in shame and “feelings of badness,” go rest your head on your heavenly Father’s chest and let Him tell you the truth.

Don’t get caught up in trying to prove you’re “good” now. Just relax and focus on this fact: Your Father loves you and thinks you’re worth it.
