When God’s Plan Is Different Than Yours: An Interview with Asaya

In the following interview, Asaya (34) talks about waiting for what God has promised and how she handles His plan being different than her own. No matter what others might think, she knows what He’s told her about the future, and she fully expects Him to be faithful in her life. Asaya is the author of Unscripted: The Journey to Self-Discovery and Dear Daughter, and she’s an amazing mentor and BTO group leader.

BTO: What is your dating life like right now?

Asaya: I’m single, but I’m currently dating someone. I’ve never been married and I don’t have any kids.

When I was in my early 20s, I thought that I would be married by 26 and start having kids by 27. This was my dream, but then 26 came and went, and here I am about to face my 35th birthday at the end of August with no husband and no kids.

Some people might look at my life and feel sorry for me, but I don’t blame them. To most, it looks like I’m on track to never walk down the aisle. However, appearances aren’t always what they seem. Oftentimes God orchestrates our lives to go down unexpected paths. Why? Only He knows. We just have to trust Him.

So if you ask me, my dream is still alive. It just looks different from what I had originally envisioned and that’s okay. I believe the journey of my life will eventually lead to marriage because God is faithful.

BTO: What is your favorite thing about being single?

Asaya: My favorite thing about being single is being able to get up and go without having to consider someone else’s schedule or feelings.

BTO: What is your least favorite thing about being single?

Asaya: My least favorite thing about being single is not having someone to do life with.

BTO: What has God taught you about waiting in your life?

Asaya: God has taught me that waiting reveals my level of trust in Him. It hasn’t always been easy. I’ve had to wrestle with my own insecurities of not being good enough and fear of being a burden. Yet through it all, God has reminded me that He does have someone for me. I just have to trust His perfect plan for my life.

BTO: What would you say to someone who is hoping to meet the right person?

Asaya: What I would say is to know that God hasn’t forgotten you. I know that may sound cliché, but it’s true. We have to believe that He wants the absolute best for us, and sometimes that requires us to wait a little longer than some of our friends and family.

To add one more thing, when that person finally comes into your life, pray, fast, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal who this person is. He will confirm the relationship with God’s peace. Until then, live your life and enjoy your singleness.
