Expecting the Goodness of God in Your Dating Life

A testimony is a personal story of something amazing that God has done for you. All of us have these stories, and all of us can see the marks of divine faithfulness in our lives.

Some of us have seen God move in jaw-dropping ways:

  • “My mom was sick in the hospital, and He completely healed her.”

  • “I owed so much money—and He paid it off for me.”

  • “My wife and I were on the brink of divorce, but then God healed our hearts.”

Some of us have “quieter” stories of His faithfulness, but these stories are just as powerful:

  • “I didn’t want anything to do with my parents, but then He restored our relationship.”

  • “I asked Him a question, and this is how He answered me. He was faithful to tell me what I needed to know.”

  • “I was single for ten years, and then He brought my husband.”

No matter the size of the story, your heart is in possession of something precious—it has seen the Lord at work. You have a testimony of His faithfulness.

Here are six ways you can look at your testimony—the ways God has been good to you—and have greater faith for your dating life. Place your testimony and your future marriage side by side, and consider what God might be saying to you.

1. Your history reveals the faithful love of God.

Those who are wise will take all this to heart;
they will see in our history the faithful love of the Lord. (Psalm 107:43 NLT)

Where in your history have you seen the faithful love of the Lord? Think about these things in light of your dating life, and write down what you feel the Lord tells you.

2. Your life is filled up with all the benefits of knowing Jesus.

Praise Yahweh, my soul,
and never forget all the good he has done:
He is the one who forgives all your sins,
the one who heals all your diseases,
the one who rescues your life from the pit,
the one who crowns you with mercy and compassion,
the one who fills your life with blessings
so that you become young again like an eagle. (Ps. 103:2–5 NOG)

Where have you seen the blessings of the Lord in your life? What beautiful things has He done for you? What makes you happy when you think of it?

3. Your future will look like the fulfillment of His promises.

Deep in your hearts you know that every promise of the Lord your God has come true. Not a single one has failed! (Josh. 23:14 NLT)

The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it. (1 Thess. 5:24 NIV)

What has God told you about your future? Has He given you a promise about your spouse? Has He talked to you about timing and when your marriage will take place? What has He told you He’s going to do for you? Whatever He has said—choose to believe Him.

4. His love surrounds you like a shield.

For you bless the godly man, O Lord; you protect him with your shield of love. (Ps. 5:12 TLB)

Where have you experienced the love of the Lord recently? What happened? What does your heart know about His love?

5. He can take anything and make it beautiful.

As for you, you planned evil against me, but God planned it for good, in order to do this—to keep many people alive—as it is today. (Gen. 50:20 LEB)

What did the enemy mean for evil in your life, but God turned that thing around and did something beautiful with it instead? How did He take the bad thing and change it? Does He astound you? Do you believe He can do beautiful things in your dating life too?

6. His goodness is running after you. You don’t have to do anything to get it—it is already there.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me
All the days of my life;
And I will dwell in the house of the Lord
Forever. (Ps. 23:6 NKJV)

Where are you seeing the goodness of the Lord today? If you can’t think of anything big, go small. Do you have a place to sleep every night? Do you have a job? Do you have people who love you? What do the small pieces of God’s faithfulness mean for your future?

What has the Lord done for you?

Your testimony of the Lord’s faithfulness can never be stolen from you. The enemy can’t take it. When God does something in your life, it is yours, and no one can cut it away from you.

Jesus is the only One who can turn bad into good. He can use even the tragedies in your life for His purposes. Your testimony of victory in Jesus is His gift to you.

Remember who the Lord is, and don’t be afraid to trust Him with your hopes and dreams for the future. He is trustworthy at levels that will blow your mind.
