3 Prayers When You’re Afraid

Are you struggling with an enemy right now? Maybe it’s despair or hopelessness. Maybe it’s a situation at your job or something physical like a health issue—yours or someone else’s. Maybe you’ve been praying really hard for someone, but it doesn’t seem like anything is changing. Because of this “enemy,” your heart feels afraid.

Think of an enemy you’re fighting right now, and keep it in mind as you read the rest of this devotional.

  • What is GOD saying about this enemy?

  • What does His Word say? You are His child, and the Bible has a whole lot to say about what this means.

Take your time with these prayers, and allow the Lord to reassure your heart in the area where it is afraid.

1. We will not fear even when we’re surrounded.

When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh no, my lord! What shall we do?” the servant asked.

“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.”

And Elisha prayed, “Open his eyes, Lord, so that he may see.” Then the Lord opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha. (2 Kings 6:15–17 NIV)

The enemy might be all around you. He might be storming the gates and demanding your destruction. But his efforts will do him no good in the end, because the army that stands with you is greater than the darkness that stands against you.

A prayer for healing:

Jesus, I know You are with me. You are with me the same way You were with Israel in the Old Testament. When they trusted You and followed Your voice, they never had any reason to fear. Please open my eyes so I can see the truth about You and Your presence. Do for me what You did for Elisha’s servant, and help me to know what it means to be a child of God—someone wrapped in Your protection. In Your name I pray, amen.

2. We will not fear even when it seems like the world is falling apart.

God is our protection and our strength.
He always helps in times of trouble.
So we will not be afraid if the earth shakes,
or if the mountains fall into the sea.
We will not fear even if the oceans roar and foam,
or if the mountains shake at the raging sea. (Ps. 46:1–3 ICB)

Many feel unstable in the world today. But even when it seems like everything is falling apart, you don’t have to be afraid—because He is with you. He is your protection and power. He will always help you when you call to Him. You can laugh when the enemy tries to convince you that everything is over. He’s not the one who gets to say that! Let your heart take courage in the Lord, and respond the same way the writer of Psalm 46 did.

A prayer for healing:

Jesus, I want to be a person who is unafraid even when the earth is shaking and the mountains are falling into the sea. I want to trust You like that and to know with all my heart that when my enemy comes against me, You Yourself are my protection. You are the answer every time I am afraid. You are my defense and refuge in all things. Please open up inside me a deep, deep understanding of how You are with me and that You are helping me. In Your name I pray, amen.

3. We are fearless because of You.

Haven’t I commanded you: be strong and courageous? Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. (Josh. 1:9 HCSB)

The Lord is stronger than anything that could try to come against you. That is just the truth, and it remains true even when your heart is fearful. Don’t allow feelings of fear to tell you what is real, but remind yourself of the truth and let your emotions follow that truth.

A prayer for healing:

Jesus, I am strong because of You. That is the truth about me: Because of You, I am courageous all the way through my core. You did not make me a person who is timid and weak, but You made me a victorious warrior capable of taking the land. I am not dismayed by the enemy’s shouts. I do not cower when the enemy raises his voice. You are turning my weaknesses into Your strength, and I am going to see the victory of the Lord. In Your name I pray, amen.
