3 Prayers When You Don’t Feel Safe

Do you feel safe in today’s world?

If you don’t, you’re among friends! Maybe you’re carrying around a bucketful of anxiety. Maybe you feel like the world is out of control and you’re powerless to protect your hopes and dreams.

Whenever we don’t feel safe, it is good to think about the One who keeps us.

Take your time with these prayers, and allow the Lord to speak to your heart about how safe you are with Him. His Word is firm in your life, and you never need to wonder whether or not He will be faithful to you.

1. When there is a threat, we can run to the Lord.

The Lord is a strong fortress. The godly run to him and are safe. (Prov. 18:10 TLB)

You protect them by your presence

from what people plan against them.

You keep them safe in your shelter

from evil words. (Ps. 31:20 ICB)

In times of extreme anxiety, verses like Proverbs 18:10 and Psalm 31:20 can feel as far away as the moon. But our emotions do not have the strength to make God’s Word less true.

The Lord is our fortress. He is our strong place of safety. He is our protection. He is trustworthy at all times. We can believe His Word even when our hearts are afraid.

Ask the Lord what He wants you to know about threats and His protection.

A prayer for healing:

Father God, You are my strong fortress. You consider me one of Your godly ones, and I can run to You and be safe in Your arms. Yes, I have the opportunity to be afraid right now, but I choose to trust in You. I acknowledge Your strength, and I know that You are moving on my behalf and working to protect me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

2. We can trust the Lord to keep loving us, even when we feel like we don’t deserve it.

For I am certain that nothing can separate us from his love: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below—there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord. (Rom. 8:38–39 GNT)

My passion is stronger than the chains of death and the grave. (Song 8:6 TPT)

The love of God is powerful. It is stronger than death—than all the forces of the enemy combined. Sometimes fear whispers that we are unloved, but this isn’t true—and it will never be true. The love of Jesus is not something that changes. His love is a rock, the same way He is.

Ask the Lord what He wants you to know about His love.

A prayer for healing:

Father God, would You teach me how safe I am in Your love? Would You show my heart the truth about Your love and how steady and faithful it is in my life? I want to understand with all my heart that nothing in this world can separate me from Your love. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.

3. We are so safe with the Lord that we can close our eyes and sleep.

I lay down and slept,

yet I woke up in safety,

for the Lord was watching over me. (Ps. 3:5 NLT)

In peace I will lie down and sleep,

for you alone, O Lord, will keep me safe. (Ps. 4:8 NLT)

Does your heart understand that the Lord—God Himself, the Creator of everything you can see and everything you can’t see—is watching over you?

We are so safe with the Lord that we can lie down and sleep, because He is the One who protects us. We are the treasure of the Lord, and He will not leave us out in the open, where the enemy could come by and steal us. He treasures us and watches over us. He is our safe place in a world that feels unsafe.

You make my lamp bright. The Lord my God lights my darkness. With Your help I can go against many soldiers. With my God I can jump over a wall. (Ps. 18:28–29 NLV)

Ask the Lord what He wants you to know about resting in Him.

A prayer for healing:

Father, please reveal to my heart how much I really can trust You. Teach me who You are. Let me see You. Show me how You are protecting me and how much You are with me. I want to be able to rest in You, even when the enemy is all around me. I acknowledge that with You, I am truly safe. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen.
