Uncover Your True Identity in His Glorious Light

Do you know who you are?
If you want to find out, here’s the key:
Stop fixating on your mistakes and perceived flaws, and instead look at the Lord and how beautiful He is.
It is there, in the light of His heart, that true healing begins, and we find out who we are. God doesn’t want us to focus on our shortcomings and shame points, because all that does is trap us in the past. Shame and failure do not have the power to tell us who we are.
Focusing on ourselves doesn’t reveal our true identity, even when we have good intentions.
Instead, we need to do what Jesus said and simply come to Him, letting go of the heaviness and our preconceived ideas so we can take on His “burden,” which is light.
Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light. (Matt. 11:28–30 NIV)
So many of us think we have to figure out who we are on our own, but only the Lord can answer that question. Our identity doesn’t come from our shame, our mistakes, or even the things we feel proud of—it comes from our Father and who He says we are.
Our heavenly Father is wonderful. He forgives, and He restores, and He heals, and He makes whole, and He gives us the desires of our hearts. There is so much life in Him that all darkness is driven away. He is the Restorer of our souls, and in His light we discover who we are.
If you’re struggling with despair, anxiety, or a feeling of consuming loneliness, let this devotional be a starting point for something new.
Let your heart rise up and say “YES!” to the light of God, which will chase away all shadows until you can see who He is and who you are.
The next time you’re tempted to pick yourself apart, think about His goodness instead.
Now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Phil. 4:8 NLT)
Notice how nothing in that list is negative. Everything is good—everything is light. Don’t be afraid to reach with both hands for your Father and let Him tell you the good way He made you. “This is who you are.”
