God’s Love Defeats Dating Fears
Do you want to meet the right person and get married…but the thought kind of terrifies you?
“What if I choose the wrong person?”
“What if they reject me?”
“What if everything falls apart and I get my heart broken?”
All those dating fears are answered in the love of God.
His love is the foundation of every healthy, life-giving relationship. He literally is love, and His love undoes the works of fear (1 John 4:8; 4:18).
The Bible has so much to say about the “practical” side of His love—that He’s with us, that He’s helping us, that He has made us new and has good things in store for us.
But if we don’t know how much He loves us, we can form painful conclusions about Him, ourselves, and dating/marriage.
“God has abandoned me.”
God will never leave us or forsake us (Deut. 31:8). But if we don’t realize He loves us this way, we can start to believe, “God is not helping me. I’m alone, and I have to make decisions by myself.”
“This relationship is going to fail.”
God is actively guiding us (Isa. 30:21). But if we don’t realize He loves us this way, we might assume our relationship will end up like other relationships.
“Marriage is a huge risk! There’s no way to know if it’s really going to work out. I’m expecting my relationship to fall apart.”
“I’m a failure. I will always make mistakes.”
When we accept Jesus, we change. We become new (2 Cor. 5:17). But if we don’t realize He loves us this way, shame can build a house in our hearts.
“I can’t have a good relationship with a healthy person. I’m too broken. So I need to accept the first person who comes along, even if there are red flags.”
We need to know how much He loves us!
He will never leave you—so you can date with confidence, knowing He is helping you.
He has fully redeemed you. You can date without shame.
He loves all your details! You can expect Him to bring you a spouse who is good for you and also loves your details.
He watches over you and keeps you safe. You don’t need to be afraid of being hurt.
Your marriage will be blessed, not cursed.
His love for you is greater than all your fears.
What dating/marriage fear are you struggling with?
When you think about dating and marriage, do you feel anxious for any reason? Today, offer that point of anxiety to the Lord. Here’s a simple prayer:
“Father, this is my fear: _______. I place this fear in Your hands. Please show me the truth of Your Word, and help me deeply believe You love me that way.”
