Let the Bible Change What You Think About Dating and Marriage

All of us have areas in our thinking that need to change because they don’t line up with what the Bible says.

When we realize we believe something that isn’t true about dating and marriage, this is actually a good thing! It means we get to leave the lie behind—along with all the trauma, pain, and despair it caused—and cling to the glorious truth of Scripture instead.

God’s Word shows us what the truth is.

When we realize we’re thinking something that doesn’t match the Bible, we can choose to change our thoughts and focus on what the Bible says instead.

Here’s an example of how this works.

Proverbs 18:22 says the man who finds a wife receives favor from the Lord. That is a core verse of Becoming the One. Our loving heavenly Father is favorable toward marriage and wants people to get married! He designed marriage and helps married couples.

But many believers in Jesus don’t actually believe Proverbs 18:22. Instead, they say things like:

“Marriage is risky. It usually ends in divorce.”

“Marriage is hard. My parents’ marriage is hard, and my marriage will also be hard.”

“I can’t expect God to help me as I date.”

“God doesn’t want me to get married. I’ll probably be single forever.”

“God doesn’t care about my desires. If I want to get married, I’ll have to fight for it. I’ll have to convince God to give me this thing.”

We need to take our thoughts captive and choose to believe what the Bible says (2 Cor. 10:5).

Here’s an amazing thing about lies and God’s truth!

Every time we recognize we believe something that contradicts His Word, it’s a cause for celebration. It means we get to let go of the false belief causing us pain and grab hold of His truth, which will set us free.

“Marriage is a good thing! And God has good things for me.”

“God loves the desires He gave me—including this desire for marriage.”

“God is with me in singleness, and He will be with me as I date.”

“God is favorable toward me and my future spouse.”

What about you?

Do you believe anything about dating or marriage that doesn’t match Scripture?

Are you questioning if God really loves you enough to bring your spouse?

Ask the Holy Spirit to show you the truth. Then hold on to that truth in your heart, and let it change how you think.
