Praying According to God’s Goodness
God’s will for you is beautiful. The Bible describes Him—and therefore His will—in amazing ways:
God’s plans for you are good (Jer. 29:11).
He is and has abundant life for you (John 10:10).
Your cup overflows with His goodness (Ps. 23:5).
His goodness is something you can “taste” and see in your life (Ps. 34:8).
The will of the Lord is good, pleasing, and perfect (Rom. 12:2).
The will of the Lord is the gentle, tender, strong, powerful, full-of-life place we get to pray from. Praying from any other place—from fear, despair, hopelessness, the lies of the enemy, negative expectations, pain, hurt—can create prayers that don’t mirror who He really is. Our prayers become much more powerful when we know God is good and everything He wants for us is also good.
Praying in Response to the Father
Truly powerful prayers are those that look like Him. In his book Hosting the Presence, Bill Johnson talks about his desire to respond to God, not to darkness:
“I can’t afford to live in reaction to darkness. If I do, darkness has had a role in setting the agenda for my life. The devil is not worthy of such influence, even in the negative. Jesus lived in response to the Father. I must learn to do the same.”
We get to live according to the LIFE of God. We get to move and exist and have our being in Him (Acts 17:28), remembering all the while how good His will is.
What He wants for you and your family is good. There is nothing bad (1 John 1:5). You get to pray accordingly.
How would you pray if you knew with all your heart that God has only good things for you?
Healing for Your Heart
Everyone has places in their heart where they need healing. One part of healing is letting go of lies and believing God’s truth instead.
“I think I’m not worthy to be His child—but He says I am worthy because of Jesus.”
“I feel rejected by God—but His Word says He will never reject me. So this feeling must not be His truth.”
“I did something God says not to do…but I have repented, and His Word says I am forgiven, even if I don’t feel like it yet.”
If you notice there’s a place in your heart that doubts God’s goodness, ask the Holy Spirit for help. It might also be a good idea to go to a mentor or Holy Spirit–led counselor who can tell you the truth about who you are in God’s sight.
His will for you is truly good, and it is time for you to believe this.
