Praying When You’re Afraid
When we’re afraid, the answer is to trust the Lord. But HOW? What does trusting the Lord look like when our emotions are raging and we feel overwhelmed?
The answer is simple…but it doesn’t always feel simple.
Fear is a lie. When we’re afraid, it means that somewhere in our thoughts, we’re listening to a lie. The truth is God is good, all the time, and He is taking care of us. There is never a reason for us to be afraid—ever. So if we are afraid, it means we need to remember who God is and what He said in the Bible.
Here are three common fears and some brief prayers based on what the Bible says. Quiet your heart and try to listen to the Holy Spirit’s soft whisper as you read over these fears and prayers.
Common fear #1: Unending financial hardship
“What if I never have what I need? What if God wants me to live in poverty?”
Simple, fear-demolishing prayers based on Scripture:
Thank You, Father, that You are the God of abundant life (John 10:10).
You are taking care of me, and I have more than enough (Ps. 23:1, 5).
You have given me all things to enjoy (1 Tim. 6:17).
You are a wonderful Father, and You generously share with me from Your storehouse (Luke 15:31).
You do not withhold good from me. You give me what I need (Ps. 84:11).
Common fear #2: Forced singleness
“What if God wants me to be single forever?”
What-if questions are usually based in fear, and this one is no different. If God has given you a desire, you can trust Him with that desire. The desire is a part of His heart just as it is a part of yours.
Simple, fear-demolishing prayers based on Scripture:
Thank You, Father, that You created humans to increase and multiply. That is a desire in Your heart for humanity (Gen. 1:28).
Thank You that my heart is important to You (Prov. 4:23).
Your Word says that the man who finds a wife finds a good thing. Marriage is good and holy in Your sight (Prov. 18:22).
You have good things stored up for those who love You (Ps. 31:19).
Thank You for the sweet, tender, faithful way You are guiding me (Prov. 3:6).
Common fear #3: Illness and disease
“What if I or someone I love gets a horrible disease?”
Simple, fear-demolishing prayers based on Scripture:
Father, You have good plans for me, not plans to harm me (Jer. 29:11).
You made my body, and it is precious to You (Ps. 139:13–17).
Jesus paid the price for me to live completely healed (Isa. 53:4–5; 1 Pet. 2:24).
You are my Healer (Ex. 15:26).
You are the One who keeps me safe (Isa. 52:12).
Child of God, you are so loved—more than you know! This week as you pray, may your heart find REST in the Lord.
This is the weekend we celebrate Easter, when Jesus rose from the dead. May your heart rise from the places where it is fearful and step with faith into Jesus’ glorious light.
