Praying God’s Will for Your Life

When you know you are praying God’s will for your life, your prayers will come alive. You will have more faith, and you will pray with more courage.

Instead of saying, “God, I’m praying for this because I want it,” you will be able to say, “God, I’m praying for this because it is what YOU want. This is not just some desire I happened to have, but it is YOUR desire for me.”

When we pray God’s will for our life, that prayer will be answered.

This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us—whatever we ask—we know that we have what we asked of him. (1 John 5:14–15 NIV)

Any prayer that lines up with God’s will and His desires for us is a prayer that will be gloriously answered. We can know—without fear or doubt—that “we have what we have asked of him.”

Can God’s Will Be Trusted?

Some believers in Jesus are afraid of God’s will.

“What if He gives me something I don’t want?”

“What if He takes away what I do want?”

“What if He makes me wait for what I want?”

But the Bible says God’s will is “good, pleasing and perfect” (Rom. 12:2 NIV). We don’t need to be afraid of what He wants for us, because it is not bad, second best, or somehow flawed.

His plan for us—what He wants to happen—is good for us, pleasing to us, and absolutely perfect. His will can be trusted.

Praying God’s Will

What has the Lord told you?

What do you KNOW He has said?

Pray about what He told you. “Father, this is what I know You have told me. I am going to trust You for this. I know You will be faithful.”

Another way to pray God’s will is to pray His Word. Which verses has He highlighted to you in Scripture? Find a verse that feels alive to you, and begin to pray it.

There is no set formula for how to pray God’s will. The way you do it might be different than someone’s else way, and that is okay. One important thing is to start—just give it a try. Another important thing is to keep your heart soft and tender toward the Lord, listening for how He might lead you to pray.

Beloved child of God, don’t be afraid to trust His will. It is better than you could hope for or imagine for yourself (Eph. 3:20). When you pray His will, you can know that He hears you and that you have what you asked for.
