Trusting God When You Don’t Know What to Do

Choosing to trust the Lord when we don’t know what to do is a precious act of worship. We are giving Him a gift that means the world to Him, even if it doesn’t feel like a gift to us. All we might feel are stress and fear and the weight of worry, because our emotions are still caught up in the struggle. Yet what we are giving God is incredibly valuable to Him. It is a sacrifice that honors Him.
When we willingly sacrifice our fears and what-if questions on the altar of trust in God, we are doing what King Jehoshaphat did in 2 Chronicles 20. A huge army had come against him, and he knew he was powerless to stop them.
But instead of giving way to fear, he turned his attention to the Lord and called for a nation-wide fast (2 Chron. 20:3). People came from all over the country to seek the Lord and fast with the king, and Jehoshaphat prayed a simple but beautiful prayer of trust:
We are powerless before this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are on You. (2 Chron. 20:12 NASB)
Whenever we find ourselves in situations completely outside our control, and fear is yelling at us, we can pray the same way: “Father, I don’t know what to do, but my eyes are on You.” That humble, little prayer comes up before the Lord as sweet incense (Ps. 141:2).
It’s okay if we don’t have all the answers. And it’s okay if we don’t feel like we’re trusting the Lord. We might feel like nothing is working and we’re just about to die, but that doesn’t mean we’re not trusting the Lord. He sees our heart, and the sacrifice is still good and holy.
In response to the king’s prayer, God utterly destroyed the massive army that had ridden against him. Jehoshaphat and his nation survived. When we don’t know what to do except put our trust in God, those are the moments when He comes and changes the world, defeating our enemy in ways so far beyond what we were thinking that we just stand there in astonishment.
What enemy are you facing today?
Where is God quietly asking you to trust Him?
This month at Becoming the One, we’re talking about a culture of trust—trusting our Almighty God with everything. Anytime you find yourself in over your head, pause and pray Jehoshaphat’s prayer: “I don’t know what to do, but my eyes are on You.” The Almighty God who defeats armies is listening. That little, powerful prayer honors Him. He is coming and He will save you.
