Trusting God When You Feel Discouraged

Faith isn’t always something you can feel. When you’re waiting for God to do what He promised—bring your spouse, heal a disease, fix a family problem, increase your finances and give you favor at your job—there will be days when you feel GREAT about what He’s doing and other days when you feel discouraged, because you can’t see that anything is happening.

This up-and-down happens with everybody, so if you are experiencing a “down” right now, take comfort. Don’t allow the enemy to whisper condemnation into your heart. You are experiencing only what is common with humans (1 Cor. 10:13).

Some days, we know God will do exactly what He said. We feel like anything is possible—because He is the Lord and He’s good. “Yes! God will do it! It doesn’t matter how impossible it seems right now! The impossibility will just show His glory more.”

But on other days, our heart feels like it’s crawling on the ground. “I want to give up. I don’t want to keep believing for this thing when I’m constantly disappointed. I’m so very tired of trying to have faith when it seems like God isn’t moving. Is this thing I’m waiting for ever going to happen?”

The following declarations are for those days—when it feels like your promise is as distant as the moon.

Remember, when you make declarations, you aren’t trying to stir up your emotions or push yourself to respond a certain way—you are simply agreeing with what God has said. All the weight, all the power, and all the hope rests on Him. So, speak these declarations from your heart, and know they are true even on the darkest of days.

Declarations of Trust

  • You are the Faithful God (Deut. 7:9).

  • You will do what You have promised me (Gen. 21:1).

  • You will fulfill every promise You’ve made me in Scripture (Jer. 1:12).

  • You will fulfill every promise You’ve made me personally (Heb. 11:11).

  • I will see the goodness of God in my life (Ps. 27:13).

  • You are pouring out abundant life on me (John 10:10).

  • Your goodness is chasing me down (Ps. 23:6).

  • Your mercy is quickly catching up with me (Ps. 23:6).

  • You are the Lord of my home (Josh. 24:15).

  • You are the Lord of my finances (Deut. 8:18).

  • You are lifting me out of the darkness that has kept me trapped (Ps. 40:2).

  • You are doing more than I have asked You for—or even thought possible (Eph. 3:20).

  • Every day Your banner over me is love (Song 2:4).

  • Every day You are pleased with me, especially right now (Ps. 147:11).

This month at Becoming the One, we’re talking about a culture of trust: trusting the Lord with everything, including our future and the marriage we are hoping for. Even when we feel discouraged, He is faithful. Even when we can’t see a way forward—He can. And we will see His goodness.
