"What If I Don't Know What to Pray?"

“I want to pray more, but I don’t know what to say.”

Have you ever wondered what to say to God? Do you feel like you sometimes run out of words with Him?

Here is one way you can always have words for Him—and not just any words, but holy words. Words that began in the heart of the Holy Spirit.

This month at Becoming the One, we have been talking about a culture of prayer.

There are incalculable ways we can pray to our Savior, Jesus—wonderful, beautiful, life-giving ways.

This week, let’s talk about lectio divina or “divine reading.” It means taking the Word of God and praying it back to Him. Choose a verse and make it personal to you, using its ideas and wording in prayer.

Here are a few examples:

Verse: For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16 NKJV) 

Prayer: Father God, You so loved ME that You sent Your Son, Jesus, to die in my place. Thank You for saving me. Thank You for rescuing me from darkness forever and making it possible for me to live every day in the light of Your love. In Jesus’ name, amen.

Verse: Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. (John 14:27 NIV)

Prayer: Father, thank You for filling my life with Your divine peace. I accept Your peace today and choose it over fear. In Jesus’ name, amen. 

Verse: “For I know the plans that I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11 NASB)

Prayer: Father, thank You for having good plans for me and my family and marriage. You have a good future in mind for me, and You do not want me to live in fear. Jeremiah 29:11 is Your heart for me, and I get to rest with You and be at peace. In Jesus’ name, amen. 

Praying the Bible can be very simple—you don’t need fancy words, and you can use any verse.

Has God put a verse on your heart?
