The names of God don’t just tell us who He is, but they also reveal what He wants to do for us.

One of His most precious names is Immanuel. We don’t have a God who is far away or immune to our desires and problems—we have a God who is with us.

He is with us when times are hard:

He will call upon Me, and I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. (Ps. 91:15 NASB) 

He is with us when we are fighting strong enemies:  

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deut. 31:8 NIV) 

He is with us when we’re overwhelmed:

So do not fear, for I am with you;
    do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
    I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. (Isa. 41:10 NIV) 

Immanuel isn’t a “small” description of Jesus that the Bible just happens to use, but it describes who God is at the core of His being. Every time we have a prayer request, every time we are worried about something, every time we have even a small concern—His name is Immanuel, and He is very close by.

He is not far away, He is not ignoring us, and He is not rejecting us. He is with us. 

What does this mean for you on a daily basis?

This means…

You don’t need to be afraid when you are struggling financially. God is His name for you. He is with you, and it is His nature to provide (Phil. 4:19).

When you are single and hoping to meet the right person, you don’t need to be anxious, because God is with you, and He is taking care of you in the area of marriage. You can trust your future to Him, and He will bring you your spouse at the right time.

When you are confused, He is Immanuel. 

When you are heartbroken, He is Immanuel. 

When your heart and mind need healing, He is Immanuel.

You get to declare His name with boldness:

• “You are with me; therefore, I will not be afraid.”

• “You are with me; therefore, I will not lose. I will not be destroyed.”

• “You are with me; therefore, I will have more than enough.”

• “You are Immanuel, which means I will be victorious in the battle I am facing.”

All of this—and so much more—is your reality because of God’s name.  

Think about God’s name and how you talk to Him.

The name Immanuel dramatically affects your prayer life. Every prayer you could ever pray gets to be rooted in this special name for God. He is not far away from you, but He is right here, and you are His precious treasure.
