Do You Need to Reset Your Brain About Sex?

What do you think about sex? How were you taught to think about it—as something beautiful or as something dirty?

Before I got married, I had to unlearn a few things I thought I knew about sex. I grew up thinking it was inappropriate and not something a good girl should think about. There seemed to be something inherently “dirty” about sexual activity. But I slowly discovered that not everything I thought I knew about sex was actually true.

Perhaps you’re dealing with something similar. Maybe you’ve adopted a certain mindset about sex that now needs to be “undone” so you can think about it the way God does.

What does God think about sex? And how is it different than what you think?

Sex Talk

The simple truth is that sex is good because God made it that way. As that is the case, you don’t have to be afraid. You get to love your sexuality and think positively about sex. Any misconceptions in this area will try to shut you down and keep you from being able to fully enjoy this gift God has given you. Remember, He gives only good gifts (James 1:17).

The desire to be physically intimate with someone is a good thing, and there is nothing wrong with it. God put this longing in your heart. It’s good to recognize its presence and entrust it to Him. God can always be trusted when it comes to sexual matters.

If you have questions or concerns about sex, don’t be embarrassed to talk to God about them. Ask Him for wisdom in this area, because He will give it to you (James 1:5). If you’re comfortable doing so, you may also want to find a godly mentor who feels safe and spend time with them. Ask your questions and see what you can learn from this person.

Do You Need to Change Your Thoughts About Sex?

If you are afraid of sex or have trouble thinking of it the way God does, begin to replace these negative thoughts with truth that is in line with God’s Word. Understand and speak aloud the good things God says about sex, and about you as a sexual being, and believe the great value He has for you.

Here are a few things you could declare:

  • I am God’s beloved child.
  • He made me a sexual being, and I am wonderfully made.
  • He is my Father, and He gives me only good things.

You get the idea. Go back to the first sexual thoughts you remember having, and ask God how He sees your sexuality. Ask Him to bring healing to your thoughts in this area, and learn to think of sex as He made it: pure, beautiful, and healthy.

Abba God is a good God, and He sincerely does have the best for you. Your story with Him is better than you can imagine.
