A Christmas Prayer When You Don't Feel Close to God
All of us experience days and seasons when we don’t feel super connected with the Lord. That’s normal. The problem is when we think we live in a place of disconnection—that the sense of distance describes who we are.
“This is what my relationship with the Lord looks like.”
“God holds me at a distance.”
“I am not good enough, and my relationship with God isn’t good enough.”
Beloved child of God, if you don’t feel close to Him right now, that is not commentary of who you are in Him or to Him. That sense of distance is not a description of His heart for you.
This is what’s true:
You’re precious in His sight (Col. 3:12).
He loves you so much that He sent His son to take your place, receive judgment on your behalf, and make a way for you to be with Him forever (John 3:16; Col. 2:14).
Because you believe in Jesus, you are holy (Heb. 10:10).
He has given you His own righteousness. You are right with Him—more than good enough—because of the wonderful blood of Jesus (Phil. 3:9).
You are flawless in His eyes (Song 4:7).
You are, right now, seated with Jesus in heavenly places (Eph. 2:4–6).
This month at Becoming the One, we are talking about a culture of unity. Being one with God and with one another. So many people don’t feel close to God, and they let that sense of distance tell them things that aren’t true. “I don’t think He even likes me. I am not important to Him.”
This Christmas season, if you don’t feel close to your heavenly Father, here’s a simple prayer.
Pray it with a heart of faith, and then for the rest of this month, keep your spiritual eyes open. Be on the alert for anything God might say or do to show you the truth about His love for you and His glorious—but sometimes quiet—presence in your life. Expect your heart to get softer, more sensitive to Him, because you’ve asked for His help.
Father, You see everything, including my heart. I don’t feel close to You right now, but I want this to change. According to Your Word, the truth about my heart is that it belongs to You because I believe in Jesus. This Christmas season, please draw me to Yourself. Help my heart to be sensitive to You, so I can know what You are saying to me. Even though I don’t feel very close to You right now, I know one thing is true: I want Jesus. Please open my eyes to see You more this Christmas. In Jesus’ name, amen.
