Agreeing with the Goodness of God!

This month at Becoming the One, we’re discussing something dear to God’s heart: unity. Being one with Him and with one another. Not separate, not divided, but together in such a way that His glory shines in us.
The Glory that You gave Me, I have given them. So that they may be one, as We are one. (John 17:22 RGT)
But practically speaking, how do we have unity with God?
What does it mean to “be one” with the Creator of the universe—who knows everything, can do anything, and is in no way limited by human understanding or strength?
When we want to draw closer to the God who loves us, here’s one of the most important things we can do:
We agree with the good things He’s already saying.
Philippians 4:8 tells us how to think according to God’s goodness. This verse reveals how He thinks and what He wants us to focus on:
Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. (NIV)
Thinking good thoughts leads to speaking good words. It’s hard to put the goodness of God into words when we haven’t accepted His goodness as our reality. If we don’t see His goodness as our truth—if we don’t really believe it—our words will sound like pain, frustration, and despair:
“Things are just getting worse and worse.”
“Nothing good will ever happen to me.”
“I will never see the fulfillment of my dreams.”
“Nothing will ever get better in my life.”
Such statements sharply disagree with Scripture and all the beautiful, hope-filled things God is saying.
Things like these:
We always walk in triumph because of Jesus (2 Cor. 2:14).
We do not belong to darkness and death. We belong to light (1 Peter 2:9).
Even when darkness is all around us, it cannot conquer us. Instead, we shine like stars (Phil. 2:15).
He’s the God of hope, and He will make a way where there isn’t one (Rom. 15:13; Isa. 43:19).
Our heavenly Father will do more than we expect or even imagine (Eph. 3:20).
He will never abandon us (Ps. 37:25).
He has abundant life for us (John 10:10).
Multiple times in the Bible, God did what could not be humanly done. He conquered armies that had come to destroy His people. He parted the Red Sea. He wiped out disease and death. He gave children to barren women. He saved and healed and proclaimed His goodness—over and over and over again.
This is Christmas: a month of joy and miracles, where anything is possible. Your heavenly Father has wonderful gifts for you. When the thoughts of your mind and the words of your mouth agree with His goodness, you get to step into unity with Him in a special way that will change your life.
