Resting in Who God Says You Are
Jesus talked about worshipping God with “all your mind.” There are many ways we can use our mind in worship, but—surprisingly—one key way is by resting our mind. More specifically, we rely on His understanding and not our own. That is worship.
The human mind is a beautiful thing, crafted by God, but like everything else, it needs to be led by the Holy Spirit. We worship Him as we cling to His understanding of a situation or problem instead of our own:
Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding. (Prov. 3:5 NIV)
What does this have to do with identity?
All of us need to learn to rest our mind whenever we talk about who the Holy Spirit says we are. Relying on our own understanding of our identity will get us nowhere, but relying on His understanding of who we are will open up entire worlds to us. We become able to embrace the good plans He has for us (Eph. 2:10).
His words about our identity require faith on our part. We choose to believe them, even when they don’t make sense. “This is who God says I am.”
Last week we talked about how the Holy Spirit uses God’s Word to show us who we are. This week let’s talk about how He speaks to us individually and shows us who we are.
How does the Holy Spirit talk to people?
God speaks in amazing ways: through His Word, dreams and visions, mental pictures, His quiet internal voice, sudden knowings, impressions, and more.
Whenever you listen for His voice, remember He will never tell you something that doesn’t line up with Scripture. The Bible is the main way we “judge” what we’ve heard and discern whether or not it sounds like God. He is our loving Father, and He is kind and full of hope, and everything He says will agree with His character, as displayed in His Word.
What might He say?
Very often, there will be crossover between what the Bible says about your identity and the unique things you hear from the Holy Spirit. He might say things like this:
I am so pleased with you (Ps. 149:4).
You are beautiful to Me (Rev. 21:2).
You are holy (Col. 3:12).
You are as bold as a lion (Prov. 28:1).
You are faithful (1 Cor. 4:2).
You are fearless (Ps. 118:6).
Similarly, He might also speak directly to your heart:
You need to see yourself the way I see you. I made you good.
You are not forgotten. I see you.
You are a worshipper. I am going to take all your fears and turn them into worship.
