Your True Identity: Where Are You Going with God?

Is it easy for you to believe what God says about you in His Word?

Do you feel like it’s too good to be true?

“How can You say that about me? I fail all the time. I make really bad mistakes. I have so much regret. It is impossible for me to say good things about myself and really believe them.”

Some of us are overwhelmed by how the Bible describes us. We don’t feel like we are holy children of God with a great future ahead of us. We feel like something else.

This month at BTO, we’re talking about our true identity: who God made us to be. What He says, and only what He says, is the truth about us.

Maybe the last few devotionals have been difficult for you because they don’t feel true to your heart. “How can I speak well about myself when I feel like a failure?”

But here’s an amazing thing about the Lord and His love for us:

We get to agree with His words even when they don’t feel true. They are where we are going.

We speak them in faith, trusting that He knows what He’s doing.

In his book Growing in Faith, Rick Sizemore says declaring God’s truth is like riding an elevator.

Confessing God’s truth is like getting on an elevator and pressing the button for the floor we want. If we don’t press a button (confess nothing), the elevator won’t move. If we press the button for the floor we’re on (confess only our present circumstances), the elevator still won’t move.

God once told me, “Rick, if you get on the elevator of life and say nothing, you will receive nothing. If you get on the elevator of life and confess the circumstances of your life at the present time, that is where you will stay.” But then He said, “If you get on the elevator of life and confess what I say about where you are going, that is where you will go!”

We get to say where we are going with God. We speak what He is speaking, and He causes us to become what He says.

Here’s a simple exercise for this week:

Think of one thing the Bible says that feels too good to be true about you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal more about it, and then practice speaking that truth over yourself—especially on the days when it feels the most untrue.

What God says about you is your true identity, even if it feels unfamiliar or like it doesn’t fit you. It does fit you because He’s the One who said it.

Where are you going with God?

Is it easy for you to accept the good things He says about you?
