Scared to Be Seen? Vulnerability Is Your Superpower!

So many people are afraid of letting down their walls with the person they’re dating. Refusing to be open and vulnerable shoots down dating relationships and marriages all the time. We like to hide:

“If this person finds out who I really am, they’ll reject me.”

“I’m not good enough.”

“I’ve made mistakes. What about my past?”

Those thoughts prove only one thing: that we don’t know who we really are.

Being vulnerable becomes much easier when we realize we are holy and we are loved, just like God says.

This letter is to all of you in Rome whom God loves and has called to be his holy people. May God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ show you kindness and give you peace. (Rom. 1:7 ICB)

You, beloved child of God, are holy. Not because you know how to act right, do right, perform well, or because you have the willpower to follow the “rules.” Your holiness is because of Jesus and what He did for you. You are holy because of Him, and His holiness is never in question.

Holiness is shockingly powerful:

When they return to the outer courtyard where the people are, they must take off the clothes they wear while ministering to me. They must leave them in the sacred rooms and put on other clothes so they do not endanger anyone by transmitting holiness to them through this clothing. (Ez. 44:19 NLT)

Holiness has the power to change whatever it touches, and it has touched you. Jesus took you out of the kingdom of darkness and set you in His kingdom, which is light (Col. 1:21–22).

What does this mean for you and being vulnerable with others?

When you are afraid to take a risk, remember you are holy.

When you are worried about your past mistakes, remember you are holy. There may be things you need to repent for—none of us are perfect in life—but the truth about you is that you are holy. That is who you are because of Jesus. It is your true identity.

When you are afraid to be transparent with someone, remember you are holy. The blood of Jesus covers you, and you have nothing to be ashamed of.

When you are worried you could ruin a new relationship, remember you are holy.

Two things are always true about you:

  • God loves you dearly, and

  • You are holy.

This week, may you come to know how much you are loved and that you are truly holy because of Jesus. May your heart have peace at the thought of being vulnerable, and may the Lord Jesus show you kindness and give you peace.
