The Reality of His Word
This month at Becoming the One, we’re talking about how to apply the Bible practically.
To do this well, we need to believe the Bible is true—that it is always true, even when we feel like it isn’t.
“Do I believe what the Bible says—I mean, for real? Do I think it’s true even when I’m scared? When I’m depressed? When I want to give up?”
When we find ourselves in an emotionally charged situation, we have a choice to make:
Do we believe God’s Word MORE than we believe our emotions?
Our emotions can say a lot of things that aren’t true.
They might say, “I am completely alone. God has forgotten about me.”
But the Bible asks:
Can a mother forget the baby at her breast
and have no compassion on the child she has borne?
Though she may forget,
I will not forget you!
See, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;
your walls are ever before me. (Isa. 49:15–16 NIV)
Our emotions might say, “I feel scared to get married, so it must be that something is wrong with my relationship.”
But the Bible says God hasn’t given us a spirit of fear (2 Tim. 1:7). Fear is never a trustworthy source in a relationship.
Our emotions might say, “God isn’t doing anything! I keep waiting, but nothing is happening. God will never do what He promised.”
But the Bible says in Joshua 21:45: “He kept every promise he had made to the Israelites. No promises failed. Each one came true” (ICB).
Emotions can feel true even when they aren’t. But when we make God’s Word more important than our emotions, He will be our Guide instead of what we’re feeling.
The next time you find yourself struggling emotionally, ask the Holy Spirit for a Bible verse to focus on.
That verse will act like a lifebuoy for your heart. Here are some good ones:
When I am afraid,
I will put my trust in you. (Ps. 56:3 NLT)
Oh, how great is Your goodness,
Which You have laid up for those who fear You,
Which You have prepared for those who trust in You
In the presence of the sons of men! (Ps. 31:19 NKJV)
The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. (Deut. 31:8 NIV)
First, be concerned about his kingdom and what has his approval. Then all these things will be provided for you. (Matt. 6:33 NOG)
Beloved child of God, don’t be afraid to take Him at His Word. It is always true, and you will see He is trustworthy. He will do exactly what He promised you. Tell your emotions what is real, not the other way around. “This is what the Bible says, and I believe it.”
