You Get to BE REAL with God
Is it easy for you to “be real” with your heavenly Father?
Do you feel comfortable exposing your heart to Him, even the deep places inside you, where you might feel a little embarrassed or ashamed?
This month at Becoming the One, we’re talking about vulnerability. Most of us understand being vulnerable with others is good, but we don’t always think about being vulnerable with God. It is easy to put up walls with Him, thinking it’s what we’re “supposed” to do.
“God doesn’t want to see this part of me, so I pretend it’s not there.”
“I can’t ask God to help me with this problem. It is too ugly.”
“I’m doing all the things I’m supposed to, and I can finally feel good about myself.”
We end up exhausting ourselves trying to be what we think God wants, not realizing we are already what He wants.
He loves every part of us, including the messy parts. He wants the parts that look like Him, and He wants the parts that don’t yet.
Relationship with God takes vulnerability—the willingness to let Him see us as we really are.
Beloved child of God, it is safe to be vulnerable with your heavenly Father.
You can let Him see the parts of yourself you feel ashamed of. He wants all of you, even the parts you’re still working on.
Vulnerability with God is peaceful. It is relaxing in a way nothing else is. You get to stop doing the hard work of hiding and just be a little child in His presence, without fear or any worries at all. He has only good for you, and He loves you unconditionally.
This is what vulnerability looks like with your heavenly Father:
Come to me, all of you who are tired from carrying heavy loads, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke and put it on you, and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in spirit; and you will find rest. (Matt. 11:28–29 GNT)
This week, practice being vulnerable with the Lord.
When something makes you happy, tell Him. When you see something you don’t like, tell Him. Use whatever language feels right in the moment—don’t try to be a “good Christian” with Him.
Let Him see the inside of you, because He thinks you are beautiful, and you are perfectly safe with Him.
