“Why Is God Making Me Wait?”

Here at Becoming the One, we want everything we say about dating and marriage to be based on three truths:

  • How much Jesus loves us,

  • That He heals our past, and

  • That He’s the only One who can tell us who we really are.

Even when we talk about a culture of patience, our topic of the month, it’s possible to approach it from a life-giving perspective.

Being patient becomes easier when we know God’s incredible affection for us.

Not just with our heads, but we can actually feel His love in our hearts.

When we don’t understand how much we’re loved, waiting for Him to bring our spouse can feel like punishment. When we see our friends meeting their spouses and getting married, but we are not, we might conclude that God is upset with us.

Without a strong sense of God’s love, waiting can also lead to self-doubt or even self-rejection. “Something must be wrong with me. I must be defective. Otherwise, I would be married already.”

But neither of those thoughts is true.

God’s love is like a pair of glasses that allows us to see what He is doing more clearly.

Last month we shared an article from our friend Jill Robson Allen, who waited for years before marrying her champion. Her story is amazing! One key component is the incredible things the Lord taught her during the wait, such as this:

I waited a long time, and it is certainly not that way for everyone. However, I can tell you this: The waiting is the time of training not just for your marriage but for the calling the Lord has for you.

Your wait today is worth so much! God isn’t thinking small with you. He isn’t just getting you ready for your spouse—He is getting you ready for your destiny.

This is important. This is worth it. Your choice to be patient will pay dividends—not just for you personally but for those who come after you as well. That is what destiny means. God is thinking generationally about your marriage, and the more you connect with His love for you, the more you will be able to sense what He is doing and be patient.

Beloved child of God, let your heart take courage!

Wait for the Lord;
    be strong, and let your heart take courage;
    wait for the Lord! (Ps. 27:14 ESV)

Choose to focus on your heavenly Father’s love, because this will make the wait bearable. You’ll be able to see the wait for what it is: something precious that brings about a glorious future for more than just yourself. God will keep His word and do everything He’s promised you.
